One US official hopes that the influence the Trump administration has worked hard on will be exploited with the aim of making Iranians behave like a normal country.
On Sunday, a US official reaffirmed that the administration of US President Donald Trump had deprived the authorities in Tehran of hundreds of billions of dollars that would have been spent on the militias, as a result of the maximum pressure policy that it adopted for more two years.
The official, who is accompanying Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on his overseas tour, said the Trump administration hopes the next administration will continue to pursue its approach to the Iran dossier and continue the campaign of maximum pressure on him.
Deprive Tehran of billions of dollars
Furthermore, he added in remarks to reporters in Abu Dhabi, “It is no secret that the administration (led by Trump) has been focusing for several years on this maximum pressure campaign against Iran,” adding that “it has achieved tremendous success. which has effectively led to “depriving the regime of billions of dollars.” That would have gone to armed groups loyal to Tehran in the region. “
“I hope that this influence, which the administration has worked hard to obtain, will be exploited with the aim of inducing the Iranians to act like a normal state,” he said.

He also saw that “the Tehran regime forced the people to endure tremendous hardship and preferred to distribute money to the militias instead of using them for food in the hope that there would be a change in November”, that is, in the presidential elections that he won the Democratic candidate, Joe Biden. “They were waiting for that, and we have to wait to see what happens,” he added.
According to the US State Department official, “this administration exists until January 20 and will continue to implement its policies until the end.”
As for the possibility of classifying the Houthi rebels in Yemen, backed by Iran, as a “terrorist organization”, he declined to confirm or deny, saying that Washington expects “the Houthis to negotiate with the UN envoy in good faith. “.
He then returned to the issue of sanctions against Iran and saluted to keep the threat of military action under discussion, echoing what Pompeo said in a press interview two days ago about keeping “all options on the table.”
It is noteworthy that Pompeo highlighted in an interview with Al Arabiya on Sunday that the US administration continues its efforts to achieve peace in the region, taking into account the danger posed by Iran.
He also indicated that Washington had formed an alliance to deal with Iran within its Middle East strategy, saying: “We are building a coalition to prevent Tehran from destabilizing the region.”
