There are no salaries for prisoners, but it helps

Ramallah | The announcement by the Palestinian Authority to reestablish relations with the Israeli enemy was not gratuitous. In exchange for the tax money (compensation) that Ramallah will receive before the end of this month and the return of American support, the Palestinian Authority has embarked on fundamental changes affecting the status of prisoners in occupation prisons. After cutting the salaries of hundreds of them in the Gaza Strip and the occupied West Bank over the past year, he is now agreeing and wants to change his financial dealings with them. Instead of offering them salaries as a national duty, they turned their case into relief and welfare! This is the way out I have reached during discussions with European mediators so that the enemy does not deduct from the “clearing” what is equivalent to their salaries.

Palestinian sources reveal that the Palestinian Authority has already begun to prepare for amendments that will change the nature of the treatment with the families of the estimated number of seven thousand prisoners, since instead of one of them receiving a salary whose value is estimated according to the type of command operation that he carried out and the sentences that he fulfills (sometimes military degrees are granted), the deal will be with them according to the social situation and the number of family members supported by the captive. Unannounced through the media, the Prisoners and Executives Authority (a former ministry) began preparing forms for inmates and their families as a first step to implement the new salary classification. Although the head of the commission, Major General Qadri Abu Bakr, denied it, sources from the “Fatah” movement confirm that the aforementioned preliminary steps will soon begin, as a condition for the full arrival of “demilitarization” and the return of US support. .

Currently, the authority is trying to pass the new amendments in silence.

Last May, Palestinian Prime Minister Muhammad Shtayyeh formed a committee headed by the governor of the Monetary Authority, which includes the head of Prisoner Affairs, the Association of Banks and a representative of the Ministry of Finance, to study Israeli threats. against banks that have accounts for the families of prisoners and martyrs. However, some of the recommendations made by the committee to keep the money flowing to the inmates are to change their classification and their families and transfer support as social relief and not on the basis of resisting the occupation. This committee was formed after the Knesset enacted a law in February 2019 to confiscate the proceeds of the sum paid to care for the families of prisoners and martyrs, followed by a military order issued a year later by the so-called “Military Governor of the West Bank “, which requires the prosecution of anyone who cooperates in the delivery of these sums, including Palestinian banks, with offenders threatened with seven years in prison.
On the other hand, the authority tried to maneuver before US pressure, after having previously canceled the Ministry of Prisoners and Ex-Prisoners and turning it into an organization affiliated with the “OLP”, in addition to trying to transform the organization into an affiliated association. to the Ministry of the Interior or Social Affairs (see the number of Saturday, October 31). Like Fatah’s custom of justifying concessions, the authority is currently seeking, under the umbrella of the financial crisis, to approve the new amendments, without provoking a major reaction in the street that has been exhausted by the crisis, on the pretext that the money it will eventually reach families and prisoners.
