Cities – Raising the price of bread … “surreptitiously”

The interim government’s Minister of Economy and Trade, Raoul Nehme, determined the price and weight of “white” Lebanese bread according to the following:
A large package, weighing a minimum of 900 grams, for a maximum of 2,000 Lebanese pounds. A medium size tie, weighing at least 400 grams, at a maximum price of 1,250 Lebanese pounds.

Nehme also fixed a ton of wheat flour, which is intended for the production of Lebanese bread (standardized category 85), the mill land, at a maximum quantity of 812,000 Lebanese pounds, provided the two decisions remain in force until January 5, 2021.

Thus, Nehme made the decision to raise the price of a wad of bread, explaining this: “Due to the sharp rise in the price of wheat on its world stock market to the limits of $ 275 per ton, or around 40 percent, in addition to the high maintenance cost of the automatic mills, based on the gift of flour from the Republic. Al-Iraqiya, which will enter the production of Lebanese bread at a rate of 25 percent, which is compatible with the best production methods. “

It is surprising that the price of a wad of bread has increased by 500 pounds at one time, which is more than 30 percent of its value, at a time when the import of flour continues to be supported by the Central Bank. This raises questions about the fate of the bread package should the Banque du Liban stop subsidizing.
