Yesterday, the Lebanese National News Agency, quoting a UNIFIL spokesperson, confirmed that 90 peacekeepers had been infected with the new Corona virus.
The organization emphasized that all UNIFIL activities related to the implementation of its mandate in accordance with Security Council Resolution 1701 continue and remain unaffected. Lebanon had recorded more than 23,000 cases of the epidemic since its first appearance months ago, as well as more than 239 deaths. Notably, at the request of the Government of Lebanon, the UN Security Council annually renews the mandate of UNIFIL. UNIFIL is a United Nations multinational peacekeeping force, which was present in southern Lebanon after Israel’s war in 2006. Its mission is to monitor the cessation of hostilities, as well as accompany and support the forces Lebanese navies during their deployment in southern Lebanon, and coordinate with the government of Lebanon and the government of Israel. It also provides its assistance to ensure that humanitarian aid reaches the civilian population and helps the Lebanese government protect its borders. It should be noted that UNIFIL eastern sector units had conducted explosives disposal training with the Lebanese Armed Forces last week at the eastern sector headquarters, located in Ebel Al-Saqi. During the 4-day training, instructors from the Spanish engineering unit operating at UNIFIL taught participants the basics of demining.
