Paris Saint-Germain striker Kylian Mbappe suffered an unpleasant injury on Friday after being knocked down by a tough and slippery inning in the first half of his club’s 1-0 win over the French Cup against Saint Etienne, but it turns out that it is not as serious as the first feared. PSG announced Saturday morning that Mbappe suffered a severe sprained right ankle in the external lateral compartment. He will now be reevaluated in 72 hours with ankle imaging and clinical analysis, and it is unclear when he will be available to resume Champions League action in August.

The expectation is that he will be away for 10-15 days and be available to play in the Champions League in August, according to Le Parisien

Opposition captain Loic Perrin went for a 26-minute tackle on the World Cup-winning star, forcing him to twist his right ankle as he fell. Mbappe had to limp out when he left the game while Perrin was sent off after a video review.

Mbappe had a brace around his ankle and had crutches when he returned to the sideline of the team in the second half of the game. He was able to celebrate with his teammates after the final whistle.

All eyes will be on the official state of Mbappe in the future. PSG faces Lyon next Friday in the Coupe de la Ligue final, but most importantly is the Champions League quarterfinals on August 12 against Atalanta in Lisbon. With Mbappe, PSG is a clear contender to win the cup, but not having it makes reaching their final goal much more difficult. Signs seem to indicate it’s available, but until the club officially confirms it will be a nervous time for fans.
