Kwan Char, known as the longest elephant in the world, is going to Cambodia to free him after the expedition

(CNN) – The 36-year-old Asian elephant, who has lost most of his life in captivity alone, is heading to a Cambodian sanctuary – thanks to the efforts of the American pop star chair.

Pakistan’s only Asian elephant has spent years in dire straits at the controversial Islamabad Zoo, where it suffered from a lack of exercise as well as cracked and defective nails due to living in an unsuitable structure.

After Kawan’s partner died in 2012, he was called “the world’s tallest elephant” – and since 2016, Cher has been part of a massive social media campaign to replace him.

Earlier this year, the Islamabad High Court closed the zoo due to its poor condition and allowed the animal welfare organization For Pass to remove the cavan that Sri Lanka gifted to Pakistan 35 years ago, the organization said.

Earlier on Monday, local time in Pakistan, the chair’s co-founder, The Free the Wild, wrote on Instagram that Kavan was being loaded into a plane and began a trip to Cambodia.

Prior to the flight, Four Paws specialists trained elephants to experience small dark and loud noises in flight, using bananas and other items.

The for-profit Cambodia Wildlife Sanctuary said in a Facebook post that Kavan will now live in a vast expanse of forest, where most of their food will be provided naturally – although it will also treat the fruit to “satisfy its sweet tooth”. Three other elephants live in the sanctuary.

In a statement from the Smithsonian Channel, which is producing a documentary on the elephant’s story, Cher learned about Kavan from people on Twitter.

“I thought, ‘How can I fix this? How can I save an elephant that has been kept in a shed for 17 years and that is a thousand miles away?’,” Cher said. “This is the first big defense of Free the Wild and I’m proud.”

Ahead of their trip, Cherry toured Pakistan and serenaded Kavanagh with the song “A Dream Is Wish Your Heart Max”.

On Friday, after meeting with Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, she Tweeted Thanks to her, “for making Kavan possible to take to Cambodia.”

A statement from the Prime Minister’s Office said that former cricket star Khan has thanked the chair and invited him to participate more in environmental initiatives in Pakistan.
