Nitrogen oxide emission up to 13 times when running more than certification ↑
Nissan Kashkai and Porsche Macan S caught 40,000 units
Benz, Nissan and Porsche were caught by authorities for illegally tampering with 14 types of diesel vehicles sold in Korea. This is a further example of a case in which Audi Volkswagen was handed over to trial as a so-called “diesel door” that manipulated emissions. It is the first time that Mercedes-Benz, the No. 1 seller of imported cars in Korea, has been caught tampering with emissions.
The Ministry of Environment announced on 6 that the exhaust gas device was illegally operated for a total of 4,381 diesel vehicles (12 types), Nissan (1 type) and Porsche (1 type) sold in the country between 2012 and 2018 The Ministry of the Environment plans to file a criminal charge with the cancellation of the certification on the 7th, the order to correct defects and impose a fine. As for the number of vehicles, there are 3,7,154 Mercedes, 2,293 Nissan and 934 Porsche. The fines for Mercedes-Benz are the highest with 776 billion won, Nissan with 900 million and Porsche with 1 billion. An official from the Ministry of the Environment explained: “The importer who received the order to correct the defect must submit a defect correction plan to the Ministry of the Environment within 45 days for approval, and the vehicle owner must receive the correction of the defect of the vehicle according to the plan “.

It was discovered that the first Mercedes-Benz was illegally tampered with by reducing the amount of urea nitrogen oxide reduction catalyst used or by decreasing the operating rate of the exhaust gas recirculation system if the operating period increased after the vehicle started to work. As a result, the nitrogen oxides emitted when driving on the road increased up to 13 times or more from the certification standard (Euro 6). Authorities judge that the equipment was operated to temporarily reduce the amount of emission during emission certification and to discharge more than this during actual operation. In June 2018, the German Transport Ministry raised a suspicion of illegal operation in the case of diesel vehicles, and the Korean government immediately launched an investigation.
Nissan operated the Kashkai vehicle’s exhaust gas equipment, but implemented a program to stop the exhaust gas recirculation system when the engine’s intake air temperature exceeded 35 degrees. As a result, nitrogen oxides were released up to 10 times more than indoor certification standards. This is the same program as the Euro 6 vehicle that was captured in May 2016, and the vehicle captured this time is the Euro 5 vehicle.

For the Porsche Macan S diesel, a program has been implemented that reduces the utilization rate of the exhaust gas recirculation system after 20 minutes. This is also the same program as the Euro 6 vehicle captured in April 2018. In actual driving, nitrogen oxide emissions were up to 1.5 times higher than certification standards.

“The Ministry of Environment is continually strengthening emission standards for diesel vehicles to reduce fine dust from diesel vehicles,” said Geum Han-seung, an environmental policy officer at the Ministry of Environment.
