Before the ‘International Transgender Visibility Day’ on the 31st, a memorial event for Sergeant Byun Hee-soo was held on the 27th.
A joint action committee for the reinstatement of Sergeant Byun and the restoration of his honor (the Air Force Committee) had a sign that read “Transgender is by his side remembering Sergeant Byun Hee-soo” on line 2 of the subway of Seoul and the square in front of the Seoul City Hall Conducted an interview.
Approximately 100 citizens attended the event that began at City Hall Station around 1:30 pm that day. The joint action began at City Hall station, followed by a round of subway line 2 and then returned to City Hall for a press conference.
They wore ribbons and badges symbolizing LGBTQ people, and after dividing the number of people one by one on the subway, they circled Line 2 for about an hour and a half. Some participants hung or displayed small flags and rainbow tents in the train compartment. Some of the participants also sat down to read books on sexual minorities and transgender people.
One participant said: “We participated to mourn the death of Sergeant Byun and report on the reality of transgender people who exist but are not recognized and treated as non-existent people.”
There were no other conflicts with the citizens, but some of the participants said: “There was a complaint that was uncomfortable to see” and they were surprised with the sheriff of the subway requesting that the tent be removed.
Participants who returned to the city hall station gathered at the Seoul City Hall Square holding umbrellas the color of a transgender symbol handed out by the organizer. They yelled, “Remembering Sergeant Byun Hee-soo, transgender people are with us.”
The Air Force Commission held a press conference at 3:31 pm to mark Transgender Viewing Day (March 31).
“Our society is forcing transgender people to hide in an invisible place,” the Air Commission said. “We are going to overcome hate and discrimination like rain and win a world where transgender people can live safely.”
