Amid the bloody crackdown by the military against citizens demanding democracy in Myanmar, the government announced countermeasures. It was decided to ban the export of military supplies to Myanmar and stop new defense and security cooperation, but this is the first time that Korea has taken action on the basis of foreign human rights conditions. This is reporter Kim Do-won. In Myanmar, there is daily news that citizens are being sacrificed by the brutal repression of the military. As the international community continues to condemn him, the Korean government has announced countermeasures. The government first decided to ban the export of military materials to Myanmar and strictly examine the export of strategic industrial materials that can be used for military supplies. At the local level, there are claims that Korean tear gas is being used to suppress protests, but the government explained that there have been no cases of export of tear gas to Myanmar since 2015. The government also said it would stop new defense and security cooperation with Myanmar. As a result, the establishment of the Korea-Myanmar Defense Council and the education and training of military officers and police in Myanmar, which were promoted by the two countries, were eliminated. Starting last year, we decided to reconsider the $ 90 million development cooperation project. However, it is a policy to continue business that is directly related to public welfare or humanitarian purposes. This is the first time that the Korean government has imposed de facto sanctions for humanitarian or human rights conditions in a foreign country. A senior official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs explained that the citizens of Myanmar are well aware of our country’s democratization experience and are looking forward to it, and the international community also shares the perception that special measures are now needed. Furthermore, it was decided to allow Burmese in Korea to remain until the local situation stabilizes even after their period of stay ends. The government made it clear that this was the first response, meaning that further action could be taken if the situation worsens. I am YTN Kim Do-won.
