Cardinal Jeong Jin-seok (90), formerly the Catholic Archdiocese of Seoul, is receiving treatment at the hospital due to his deteriorating health. It was confirmed that Cardinal Chung did not want life support treatment and pledged to donate organs and corneas after death in the event of brain death.
According to the Catholic Church on the 28th, Cardinal Jeong Jin-seok was recently hospitalized at the St. Mary Hospital of the Catholic University of Seoul for treatment. It was reported that his condition has worsened over a week ago, and although he is conscious, he has crossed the hurdle several times.
The Archdiocese of Seoul said: “Cardinal Chung himself signed on September 27, 2018 that he would not provide life support treatment in the life support medical plan.”
“In 2006, in case of brain death, which he promised, he asked the medical team to donate organs and post-corneal donation. I have requested it in writing, ”he said.
On the 25th, the parish said that Cardinal Chung had to dedicate the entire balance of his savings account to the soup kitchen, Myeongdong restaurant and the children’s religious education.
Cardinal Jung had undergone various surgeries due to a chronic illness in the past, but regained his health and continued his writing activities.
Cardinal Chung was born in December 1931 in Seoul, and in 1954 he enrolled in the College of Theology at the Catholic University and received a private product in 1961. After serving as the youngest bishop in 1970, he served as head of the Diocese of Cheongju and President of the Church of the Catholic Bishops of Korea for 28 years.
From 1998 to 2012, when he was appointed Archbishop, he served in both the Archdiocese of Seoul and the Pyongyang Diocese of Seo-ri. As a Korean, it was the second time after Cardinal Kim Soo-hwan.
Since 2007 he has been a member of the Committee of Cardinals of the Constellation of the Holy See and, since his retirement in 2012, he stayed at the Catholic University of Hyehwa-dong, where Cardinal Kim stayed.
