The Japanese academy and civic groups began to verify and criticize Harvard University Professor Ramsey, who claims that “the women of comfort were voluntary prostitutes.” Societies related to history in Japan met to hold public seminars to point out the problems of the thesis and spread the information to the world. Professor Ramsey’s thesis noted that it echoes the claims of the Japanese right-wing forces since the 1990s. Obviously, the problem of human rights violations in which there are victims is incorrect in assuming an egalitarian contractual relationship with eyes closed. Point of view aside, the scholarly article itself was judged to have a big problem. Four academic organizations, including the Japan Society for Historical Studies and the Japan Society for Historical Research, announced a full thesis verification at a public seminar on the 14th of next month. This is the first time that Japanese academics have jointly responded to Professor Ramsey’s thesis, which is causing international repercussions. The civic group that organized this seminar was concerned about the dissemination of the distorting thesis of Professor Ramsey’s history by the Japanese right. He then pointed out that the fact that the historical revisionists trying to take responsibility for the war became the mainstream of the Japanese ruling powers eventually led to a question of education. The organizers said the first thesis critique seminar has already received requests from ordinary citizens. Furthermore, he added that before the seminar, a statement protesting Professor Ramsayer’s thesis will be announced not only in Japanese, but also in English and Korean, and will be released to the world.
