The petroglyphs at Bangu University, National Treasure No. 285, containing the life of our prehistoric ancestors, have been selected as a priority for the UNESCO World Heritage List. However, there is still a long way to go to overcome the complicated process and be listed as a World Heritage Site. This is reporter Kim In-cheol. This is a hemispherical petroglyph that contains the life of our prehistoric ancestors. In 1971 petroglyphs with more than 300 paintings, including whaling and hunting, were discovered on a rock 2.5 m high and 9 m wide. This Bangudae petroglyph, which features the first whaling activity in East Asia, was selected as the priority for inclusion on the World Heritage list. It has been 11 years since it was included on UNESCO’s Provisional List of World Heritage Sites in 2010. The priority target for inclusion in the World Heritage list is the “Bangudae Valley Area”, which covers the cornerstones of National Treasure No. 147, Cheonjeon-ri, including the petroglyphs of the University of the Hemisphere. In the meantime, we have tried several times to be selected as a priority for inclusion in the World Heritage list, but it has been postponed due to the conservation method and water problems. However, when the government decided to solve the water problem, it was first selected as the target for inclusion. To be included in the UNESCO World Heritage list, the Korean government must submit an application to UNESCO after it has been included in the provisional list and prioritized this time. It is then decided whether it will be designated as a World Heritage Site through a UNESCO review. The city of Ulsan plans to discover academic materials and conduct public relations activities for registration as a World Cultural Heritage Site, to be decided in 2025.
