A new vaccine against coronavirus infection (Corona 19) to be vaccinated against USFK will arrive in Korea on Christmas 25. The first people in Korea to receive the Corona 19 vaccine are expected to be USFK.
According to military officials on the 24th, the initial supply of the US Department of Defense Corona 19 vaccine to the USFK is scheduled to arrive in Korea on the 25th on a cargo plane at Incheon airport. The vaccine is a modder or corona vaccine that was recently approved for emergency use by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Since Christmas is a public holiday, the vaccination is expected to take place next week at the ‘Brian Allgood’ hospital at Camp Humphreys in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi province.
In a command letter sent by USFK commander Robert Abrams to soldiers the day before, “initial vaccination is limited to medical personnel and essential personnel in accordance with the policy of the United States Department of Defense.” . It is also of interest that some 40 KATUSA soldiers (KATUSA, ROK Army personnel augmented into the 8th US Army) serving as mandatory administrative personnel at this hospital will be included as priority vaccination targets. For vaccination against KATUSA soldiers, the discussion of the USFK State Agreement (SOFA) subcommittee was required, but it was reported that there was no request for consultation until the afternoon of the 24th.
However, the USFK said that “Once we receive the vaccine, we will administer the Modena vaccine to all qualified members of the USFK community who have fought the COVID-19 virus to protect our troops and communities once we receive the vaccine”. Postponing it, it seems likely that KATUSA soldiers will also receive the vaccine.
