Kim Jong Un has called for an 80-day campaign to boost North Korea

Ahead of the military parade, in which it may unveil its latest weapons, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has ordered a five-day national campaign to boost the ailing economy.

Kim made the demand at a meeting of the ruling Workers’ Party’s Politburo on Monday, saying that amid difficult years for the Hermit Kingdom, the COVID-19 epidemic puts more pressure on the economy affected by the recent storms.

“We have made historic strides through our costly endeavors, courageously facing unprecedented serious trials and tribulations this year, but we must not rely on our reputation,” he said, according to the Korean Central News Agency.

“We still face challenges that cannot be ignored and we have a lot of goals to achieve this year,” The Depot said.

In August Gust, Kim announced that the ruling party would hold a congress in January to draw up a new five-year plan.

“The days leading up to the party’s eighth congress are the time of the final struggle of the year and the last phase of implementing the five-year strategy for national economic development … so that the whole party and the whole country should pay everyone else.”

Last year, he promised “further success” in his campaign to build a self-reliant economy in the face of the regime’s haphazard sanctions to curb its nuclear and missile programs, according to a Reuters report.

Analysts, meanwhile, expect Pyongyang to show the latest developments in those programs during a parade marking the country’s ruling party’s 75th anniversary on Saturday.

They expect North Korea to keep an eye on indications that it could use the experiment to unveil new weapons or test ballistic missiles launched from submarines.

Nuclear talks between the US and North Korea have stalled since a summit with Kim and President Trump in Vietnam last year failed to reach an agreement.
