Keanu Reeves thinks ‘Matrix’ As Trans Allegory is ‘cool’

If you can say that there is one film that has dissected and most researched its philosophy, it would be a strong case. The Matrix. The film has written dissertations and books around its themes and ideas, unlike just an action film.

However, after Lilly Wachowski herself confirmed that the film was written as a metaphor for the transgender experience, people are envious of those who understood it.

Which brings us to infamous nice man and star of The Matrix franchise, Keanu Reeves.

Reeves was asked about the idea that the film was a transfer story, and he shared his thoughts. While he was never told about that aspect of the film, he was nonetheless supportive.

In an interview with Yahoo Entertainment, he said:

“I think The Matrix movies are deep, and I think allegory can speak to a lot of people in different versions of the movie about it.”

“And for Lilly to come out and share that with us, I find it cool.”

Could you have expected Keanu Reeves to be cooler than he already is?

This particular reading of The Matrix because an allegory for the trans experience has always been popular, with greater credibility for this idea in later years after the Wachowski sisters emerged as trans.

There were even plans to show the character named Switch by two different actors, with a male actor playing the character in the real world, and a female actor in The Matrix himself. The studio eventually cut this decision, but Switch is still given an androgynous look to pay homage to the idea.

Reeves was asked if these ideas about gender and identity would come up in the new film.

He replied:

“I do not know. I think it will be open to interpretation.”

Lilly Wachowski has been focal about the transfer story in the Matrix films. In an interview with Netflix, she talked more about this idea.

She said:

“The Matrix was all about the desire for transformation, but it all came from a closing point of view.”

This can be seen with the idea that your world is more of a facade than what is real to you, or even in Agent Smith calling Neo “Mr. Anderson”. It plays to the concept of dead names of the main character, especially since he uses a gendered sense to do so.

Reeves has always been very popular, with recent roles growing his fame. But it is his attitude beyond films that has earned him admiration from the general public.

We hope he appreciates a few jokes as well.

The next movie the The Matrix series is currently back after filming in Berlin, with strict security measures in place. The extra steps to ensure the safety of the cast and crew delay the film by one year, with a new release date of April 2022.
