John Carmek talks about PC VR from Oculus Quest 2, XR2 and AirLinks

Backed by Triple Monitor Setup, Facebook’s part-time technical guide John Carmack unwritten about VR status this week and uninterrupted for about 82 minutes.

Wikipedia gives the movie runtime, “This is a spinal tape” as 82 minutes. So you’ll be able to play on the movie the moment Karmak starts talking, and you’ll be at the end of the movie about the time Karmak ends up saying, “And I think I’m done here.” During the uninterrupted flow of consciousness that shut down Facebook Connect on September 16, Doom’s co-creator, rocket scientist and longtime VR. Enthusiastic Oculus Quest 2 and its “state-of-the-art” XR2 chipset cover everything. c Cools link to PC VR connection, internal play on Facebook and their push towards general purpose computing system.

In the comments and description of the video below, I’ve found a guide to take you straight to some of the most interesting comments. One thing in particular comes around 31 minutes and 28 seconds when Carmack discusses the wireless connection between the gaming PC and Oculus Quest.

“We have not yet announced the perfect, like, wireless connection system for Link,” Carmack admitted. “And we have international arguments about this – about quality bars – and I … can just say that someone is using a wireless VR streaming system and getting value out of it.”

Guy Godin’s virtual desktop is, of course, one of the clearest examples. The version of the app available by Quest from the Est Coolus store, given the variability in the quality of the experience, does not allow owners to play their PC VR games wirelessly due to restrictions imposed by Facebook. Many people venture on SideQuest, and install patches that unlock this capability. Although Carmec does not specifically name the virtual desktop in its comments, it essentially points to such solutions as “clearly meeting someone’s minimum quality bar and delivering value as they come and go… so I keep hitting that drum.” Where we want. There is some kind of ‘air link’. ”

It’s the first time we’ve noticed the term “air links” and it’s interesting to hear him speak openly about the situation around a wireless PC VR connection. Oculus Quest is already one of the leading PC VR headsets used on Steam by methods like Oculus Link and Virtual Desktop, and Oculus Quest is set to send more Facebook headsets for use on Steam starting October 2.

We’ll have updates as we hear more about Facebook’s plans for wireless PC VR games on Oculus Quest. I encourage you to check out some of Carmack’s comments on time stamps recorded as chapter markers in the video above. Carmeck’s comments provide a rare glimpse into Facebook’s internal team dynamics while providing a glimpse of the road ahead.
