Joey Chestnut and Miki Sudo continue to reign supreme when it comes to Nathan’s famous hot dog eating contest.
No one else is even close.
Chestnut, 36, set a world record of 75 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes on Saturday to win the mustard yellow belt for the 13th time in 14 years. Her total surpassed her own record of 74, set in 2018.
“It was difficult,” said Chestnut. “I knew it was fast at first. It was like breakneck speed. And the dogs cooked really well today. Minute six is where I really missed the crowd … and I hit a wall, and it took a little more work to get through it. This is a crazy year, and I’m happy I was able to get a record. “
Darron Breeden finished second behind Chestnut with 42 hot dogs and scones.
Meanwhile, Sudo set a new world record by eating 48.5 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes for his seventh consecutive victory in the event. Sonya Thomas had held the record 45 since 2013.
With his seventh title, Sudo bested Takeru Kobayashi, who won six men’s competitions, and ranks second after Chestnut.
“I feel great,” said Sudo, who finished 32.5 hot dogs and scones before his closest competitor on Saturday. “I’m sure the physical effects will kick in a bit. I think the condensed prep period really started a fire under me.”
Both Chestnut and Sudo earn $ 10,000 in addition to the belt.
Nathan’s famous hot dog eating contest was held in very different circumstances this year due to the coronavirus pandemic. In lieu of its traditional outdoor setting outside Nathan’s flagship store at Coney Island in Brooklyn, New York, the event was held indoors with COVID-19 security measures.
And instead of 15 competitors shooting, each competition was limited to just five.
The last time Chestnut lost this competition was in 2015, to Matt Stonie, who was unable to compete this year due to travel restrictions.
