JK Rowling and Stephen King
After a series of transphobic statements, Harry Potter Author JK Rowling has found herself essentially excluded from the world she created. The main three Harry Potter Actors (Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint) have released statements condemning Rowling’s comments, as have Edling Redmayne, Rowling’s star. Fantastic beasts series of shoots. So when the literary giant Stephen King apparently threw Rowling a life preserver by retweeting her publicly, her excitement could be understood. And yet, just three clicks later, King found himself blocked by Rowling.
It all started over the weekend when King retweeted a Rowling tweet quoting feminist writer Andrea Dworkin. “Men often react to women’s words (speaking and writing) as if they were acts of violence; sometimes men react to women’s words with violence, “Rowing quoted Dworkin as writing. He then added his own appendix, tweeting:” It is not hateful for women to talk about their own experiences, nor do they deserve shame for doing so. “
A seemingly innocuous tweet with a sentiment anyone can back, which is why horror legend Stephen King probably shared it himself. Realizing her retweet, Rowling expressed her gratitude and replied in a new message: “I’ve always revered @StephenKing, but today my love reached, perhaps not Annie Wikes levels, but new heights. It is much easier for men to ignore women’s concerns or belittle them, but I will never forget men who stood up when they didn’t need it. Thanks Stephen.
After viewing the exchange between the two authors, a Twitter user contacted King to ask him to respond to Rowling’s previous comments about trans women: “By telling us constant readers if you think trans women are women.” King replied in kind, simply writing, “Yes. Trans women are women. “
Minutes later, Rowling deleted her previous tweet praising King and blocked her account.
