Helmut Marco, advisor to Red Bull F1 Motorsports, reiterated that Red Bull will not follow Honda’s withdrawal from F1.
Honda announced that it will withdraw from F1 for the 2021 season only. Red Bull Racing and Alpha Tauri had to find a new engine supplier in 2022.
Having achieved the goal of producing a race-winning F1 engine, Honda has decided to “work towards achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.”
As a result, Red Bull, which switched to Honda from 2019, fell into a dilemma. Various solutions have been reported, such as repairing the relationship with Renault, receiving the engine supply from Mercedes, or taking over the intellectual property rights of Honda F1 and building its own power unit.
But the only option not on the table is for Red Bull and Alpha Tauri to retire from F1 in 2021.
“We will continue to be involved in the sport, as evidenced by the fact that both teams have signed a new Concorde agreement,” said Helmut Marco.
“Our ambition for the remainder of 2020 and 2021 is to work with Honda to pursue the most wins and good positions in the championship.”
“In addition, the team will evaluate the most competitive solutions from 2022.”
Helmut Marco added that Honda was not angry with the decision to withdraw from F1 and understood the “challenge” facing the auto industry.
“Both Red Bull teams have had good relationships with Honda as an engine supplier in recent seasons,” said Helmut Marco.
“We understand Honda’s decisions and we respect all the challenges in the global automotive industry and we respect the direction they should take.”
