  • A creature was accidentally discovered under 900 meters of ice in Antarctica.
  • Two unidentified creatures were found in places where life was not thought to exist.
  • The next challenge is to find a way to get closer to identifying this creature.

Organisms were found under 900 meters of ice in Antarctica. Until now it was thought that life could not exist there.

Scientists have traditionally considered the existence of living things impossible due to extremely low temperatures and the lack of light and food.

The organism was attached to the ice below the Filchner-Ronne ice shelf in Antarctica. It was discovered by experts from the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) when the ice was scraped off at a depth of about 870 meters.

“Underneath the ice shelf is probably one of the little-known habitats on Earth,” Huw Griffiths, one of the scientists who discovered the creature, said in a video on Twitter.

“I didn’t expect to find a sponge-like creature.”

I discovered life living in an extreme environment! Far below the ice shelves in Antarctica # Antarctica, there is more life than expected.

Explanation by Dr. Hugh Griffith, BAS marine biologist.

The Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf is a huge ice sheet that floats on the sea that extends from Antarctica. Covering an area of more than 1.5 million square kilometers, little research has been done under the ice so far.

Huge icebergs can break apart and run out of ice. In December 2020, one of those huge icebergs was in danger of approaching seal and penguin nurseries.

Scientists say they did not come here to search for living things.

They pierced the ice to sample the seabed. But instead, the camera hit a block of ice. Watching the video revealed this discovery.

Life was discovered after excavating 900 m from the Filchner-Ronne ice shelf in # Antarctica, Antarctica.

“I didn’t think there were any creatures there, so I wouldn’t have tried to find them after a million years,” Griffith told the Guardian.

BAS images show two unidentified creatures. Creatures marked in red have long legs and creatures marked in white are like round-shaped sponges.

These creatures were found 250 kilometers from the open sea.

“Our findings raise more questions than answers, such as ‘how did you get there?’, ‘What are you eating?’ And ‘how long have you been there?’ “Griffith said in a press release.

He states that the next step is to see if these creatures are really unknown.

“To answer that question, we must find a way to get closer to these organisms and their habitats.”

As I mentioned earlier on Insider, living on an Antarctic research base is not easy.

It is so far away that it was not until December 2020 that the first cases of COVID-19 were reported on the continent.
