A month in Hokkaido fear a record snowfall
Over the next month, cold weather is likely to remain more severe than usual because it is easily affected by cold air, especially in the first half. Also, the amount of snow may increase due to the influence of cold air. We have summarized the forecast weather characteristics based on the latest one-month forecast.
Week 1 (January 2-8) In the new year of extreme cold and heavy snow
Today (31), the Sapporo District Meteorological Observatory announced the outlook for next month. Today’s Hokkaido has been cold at a record high for December, but is easily affected by the strong cold air in the first week of January, the temperature is still lower than normal, and it is snowing on the Sea of Japan side. It will be nice weather.
The peak of the cold air series is expected to be tomorrow (day one), the maximum temperature is around 8 degrees below zero and the amount of snow falling in one day is expected to be 50 cm. After that, the cold weather and heavy snowfall continue, and 3 may be about 100cm of snow in just one day. In addition to the latest weather information, you need to pay attention to traffic information, as it may affect transportation.
2nd week (Jan 9-15) Is it a record snowfall?
In the second week, the temperature will be lower than normal and you will still be susceptible to cold air. The winter-type pressure distribution is stronger than normal and there are likely to be more cloudy and snowy days on the Sea of Japan side than normal. It is necessary to continue paying attention to heavy snowfalls as the amount of snow can increase considerably.
At 6:00 pm today (December 31), the snowiest area in Hokkaido is 158 cm in Zhumari, Horokanai-cho, Kamikawa district, but it snowed in the first and second weeks of January. Depending on the person, it is not strange that the snowfall increases another 100 cm in the next half month. As of the first half of January, we have recorded 250cm of snow in Hokkaido only twice in the past, but this winter may be the third record snowfall ever.
Week 3 to 4 (Jan 16-29) It’s about the same as normal, but be careful.
From the third week on, the winter-type pressure distribution is the same as in normal years and the temperature is expected to return to normal. However, in the second half of January, there are many places where the cold peak of the year will be reached. For example, the average seasonal temperature in Sapporo is lowest in late January, 4.2 degrees below zero. The amount of snow in each season is also the highest at 63 cm in normal years. Therefore, returning to normality does not mean that the snow and cold will weaken, and it will be necessary to continue taking measures against the cold and snow.
Also, if it snows in other areas besides normal years, there is a possibility that the snow will intensify mainly in the second half of January even in Doto, where there was little snow until now. Even in Obihiro, which has never seen more than 1 cm of snow this season, the average snow in January is 59 cm. It seems that the winter landscape on a grand scale will finally arrive.
