Mercedes F1 team boss Toto Wolf believes Red Bull Honda missed an opportunity that could have shaken Mercedes’ 1-2 result at the Belgian F1 GP.

Barring the crashes of Antonio Giovinatti and George Russell, Lewis Hamilton won the Mercedes F1 with Bartelli Bottus 2nd and finished 1-2 in a race where there were few problems. Hamilton in particular had a perfect afternoon.

But Toto Wolf believes that the only driver at the same pace, Max Verstappen, would probably make it to the podium for second place.

Most teams chose a one-stop strategy when they introduced the safety car on lap 11 and replaced it with hard tires. This was faster than ideal and many drivers had to check the tires in the second half of the race.

Toto Wolf could have worked for Red Bull Honda if they had had a second pit stop at Max Verstappen and attempted a “undercut.” Sky sports I told.

“I think the pace was good and there is nothing negative about it,” said Toto Wolff.

“The period was too long, so the tires were nearing the end of their life, so I got a bit of a cold sweat at the end.”

“I think it was the same with Max, and in that sense everyone was starting to control the pace and protect the tires.”

“I thought Red Bull would push us to a pitstop at a certain stage. We had a 1.2 second gap to Max and a 2 second cut, Maybe they could have beaten us at the end to get second place.

“We couldn’t have stopped Lewis in the pits, but there was a risk that we would finish first and third.”

Lewis Hamilton admitted that he was afraid of losing the victory due to tire degradation late in the race, and said the flat British F1 GP tire was overwhelmed.

“It wasn’t the easiest race. We crashed at Turn 5, we were starting to vibrate a bit and we also crashed at the last corner,” explained Lewis Hamilton.

“No matter how much I pushed, the temperature of the tire dropped slowly. When I lost the rubber, the temperature of the tire dropped, so I had a bit of difficulty.”

“The right front could have been the last stage, like Silverstone, and I was a little nervous. I was working the tires.”

“The tires seemed to have enough rubber and maybe there was no problem. He didn’t seem like he was worried.”
