Honda F1 final year qualifying begins
The first F1 round of the Bahrain GP will take place at the Bahrain International Circuit from March 26 to 28 (local time). Honda, which supplies PU (power unit) to F1, has announced the end of participation in the 2021 season, which will be Honda’s last year in F1.
Honda’s Yasuaki Asagi, who is leading the development, talks about the excitement for the final F1 season.

Honda introduced an entirely new design PU called the “new skeleton” in the final year of F1. The modern F1 is a PU composed of ICE (internal combustion engine), MGU-K (engine generation unit using kinetics[mecánica]) and MGU-H (engine generating unit using heat[calor]). It is equipped with a low center of gravity and compactness, such as lowering the cam position on the ICE part. We are checking from the combustion chamber.
Tsunoda, making his F1 debut, is second in Q1!
In qualifying from 00:00 on March 28, Japan time, Japanese F1 driver Yuki Tsunoda, who has been in Q1 for 7 years, played an important role. Lewis Hamilton (No. 44 Mercedes Car) set the fastest time in 1’30.617, and Max Verstappen (No. 33 Red Bull Racing Honda Car) topped in 1’30.499, showing Honda’s good performance.
And Pierre Guthrie (Car 10 Alpha Tauri Honda) clocked 1 minute 30 seconds 848, which is the third fastest time, and Yuki Tsunoda, who will be the debut match in F1, is Hamilton, who is the F1 world champion in 2020. a record of 1 minute 30 seconds 607. In addition, Kakuda registered second place in the absence of the best time in the sector, showing that he has managed time well.
The result of Q1 is Verstappen, Kakuda, Hamilton in that order. Just before the end of Q1, Nikita Mazepin (Car 9, Haas Ferrari), who will make his F1 debut like Kakuda, spun into the first corner. It was the end of the Q1 confusion when Yellow came out.
Tsunoda loses Q2 on medium tires
After 12:25 AM on the 28th, the 15-minute Q2 begins. In this Q2, the final will start on the tires that recorded the time they advanced to Q3. If you can advance on medium tires, you can lengthen your first stint in the final. Four teams, Red Bull, AlphaTauri, Mercedes and McLaren, had their first attack at half time.
In this first attack, Hamilton set the best time in 1’30.085. Guthrie is in eighth place and Tsunoda is in ninth place, which is a bit awkward to get through Q2. To pass safely to Q3, a time attack on soft tires is expected.
However, both players made their second attack on medium tires. Guthrie passed Q2 in eighth place with 1: 30.313, but Tsunoda was eliminated in Q2 in 13th place. As for Kakuda, it was Q2 that made me think that if it was a soft tire, it would have passed Q2. Pérez also finished 11th on medium tires and lost Q2.
Pole position is Verstappen
In Q3, there are no restrictions in the final as in Q2, so all players attack with soft tires. In the first attack, Verstappen took the lead at 1: 29.526, Hamilton at 1: 29.549, Guthrie at 1: 30.014 and Bottas at 1: 30.216. In terms of PU, Honda, Mercedes, Honda, Mercedes in that order.
In the second attack period, Red Bull Honda’s Verstappen set the fastest time of 1’28.997. He got pole position over Hamilton with 1: 29.385. AlphaTauri Honda’s Guthrie finished fifth with a time of 1: 29.809.
Until now, I didn’t know the true power ratio in test and practice, but I showed that Red Bull Honda’s Verstappen has the fastest potential. On the other hand, Mercedes is in second and third place, and the top three in the 2020 season are in the top three.
As a Honda PU team, I am looking forward to the success of Guthrie, who started on medium tires in fifth place, and I would like to hope that Perez in eleventh place and Tsunoda in thirteenth place return.
The Bahrain F1 GP first round final will begin at 0:00 on March 29 Japan time. The 2021 season has started with a lot of fun, like winning the Honda PU first round and racing in the Kakuda final.
