  • The photo shows a damaged Boeing 777 engine that broke down over Colorado.
  • Although the Pratt & Whitney engine failed, United Flight 328 returned to the airport and was able to land safely.
  • Researchers have posted photos, indicating that the blade damage appears to be due to metal fatigue.

The posted photo is of a Boeing 777 that broke down shortly after takeoff, showing the engine fan blades breaking.

This image was released by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) in late February 22 (local time). They are United Airlines planes that had to return to Denver on February 20 due to an engine failure.

Images of the Pratt & Whitney PW4000 engine show that the engine blades were broken and the adjacent blades were also damaged.

According to officials, the damage to the aircraft was limited to this engine.

The investigation revealed that two blades were broken and part of one blade was buried in the ring at the end of the engine. It is quite possible that the broken blade will hit another blade and be damaged.

NTSB President Robert Sumwalt told a news conference yesterday that the cause of the engine damage “appears to be metal fatigue.” The NTSB has only conducted a preliminary investigation and has yet to reach a conclusion, saying the investigation is ongoing.

He also released a photo of the damage to the aircraft and explained that it was a part that did not affect the flight.

The plane had 229 passengers and 10 crew on board. No injuries have been reported.

The damaged engine was on fire, according to video images filmed during the flight. There is also a photo of a fragment of a plane that fell near the airport.

The NTSB said it is currently analyzing the aircraft’s voice and flight recorders. NTSB investigations into these types of accidents typically take more than a year.

United Airlines has stopped using all 24 Boeing 777s of the same type as the crashed plane. The company owns 28 aircraft with the same engine. Other airlines that operate the same type of aircraft, Korean Air, Asiana Airlines, Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways have also stopped operating the Boeing 777.

Boeing said it supports the measures taken by the airlines and recommended that the Boeing 777 with the same engine be discontinued. According to the company, 69 aircraft are in operation worldwide, which is more than that in terms of the number of aircraft it owns.

The secretary of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said yesterday that he was requesting an “immediate or improved inspection” of the plane carrying the engine.

Reuters reported that Pratt & Whitney said regulators were in talks.
