The child care industry is one of the slowest ICT industries in Japan. Mr. Shigeru Sadamatsu, who runs more than 70 daycare centers that use technology, says: “There are values in the field that consider efficiency in child care to be bad, but efficiency is necessary for children.”

Most of the recording work was done by “handwriting”
Among the various industries in Japan, especially in the child care industry, the delay in the introduction of ICT has become noticeable, which has been a factor in the reduction of productivity at the site. In that sense, there is a lot of room for improvement.
It was when he was still the director on the scene. Almost all of the registration work required in the field was done manually. Specifically, a wide variety of records, such as records of children’s arrival and departure times, childcare plans, and activity records, were all handwritten.
In addition, things that correspond to daily routine work, such as attendance records, correspondence, and diaries, were also made primarily by hand. However, many of these are already systematized in other industries and handwriting is inefficient in terms of time and effort.
So I first instructed the field to enter the recording work that was being done by hand in Excel as much as possible. By doing so, it was possible to manage the records centrally and while avoiding errors, omissions and omissions, it was possible to save labor. After logging into Excel, I uploaded it to the cloud and managed it.
Even with this kind of ingenuity, the workload on the site was vastly improved. However, it is also true that veteran kindergarten teachers who have worked for a long time tended to believe in the need to be analog rather than doubt the meaning of doing the job by hand.
There was a strong refusal on the site to “improve efficiency”
Of course, both digital and analog data are good and bad. However, to provide better child care services with limited staff, it is essential to use technology to improve reproducibility. In that sense, young kindergarten teachers can be more adaptable.
It is difficult to judge from the aspect of “education”, but from the idea of ”saving labor in the office work of kindergarten teachers”, it is clear that the introduction of the system is a rational decision. The reason is that if she can reduce the time for office work, the nursery teacher can spend more time interacting with the kindergarten children.
The discussion about “improving the efficiency of child care” is also a misleading part in this regard. When I developed the daycare operations management system “CCS (Child Care System)” and gave presentations at other daycare centers, I refused to say, “Efficient child care is an idea to leave children alone.” They were not few.
