In the final round of the 2020 WRC, Monza, Toyota’s Sebastian Ogier won the championship after finishing all competition schedules. He won the turbulent rally and decided his seventh driver’s title. Second place is Hyundai’s Oit Tanak. Hyundai’s Dani Sold also came in third, with Hyundai winning the Manufacturers title back-to-back.

The weather on this day was cloudy. The temperature at the start was as low as 4 degrees, and although it was not raining, the condition of the road surface remained wet. On the gravel section, the ruts are filled with water, a route that will not disappoint drivers.

Toyota’s Elfin Evans, who retired in SS11 the day before, took the lead, followed by Takamoto Katsuta and Calle Robampera. Hyundai’s Thierry Nouville was revealed in the team statement the day before that he would not be racing on the final day. After analyzing the damage to the car, team representative Andrea Adamo said it was a measure to prevent further damage.

The tire options for each car facing SS14 in the first stage were different. With four rain tires, Ogier, Tanak and Robampera. Tanak will be equipped with a rain tire and Rovanpera will be equipped with a replacement snow tire. On the other hand, Evans, Katsuta, Sold and Rappi chose four snow tires. Of these, Sold will be equipped with a replacement wet tire. And the result is that Ojie is the best time in the SS. According to him, “I ran clean”, but the effect of the tires seems to have been great. With this SS, he set the 3rd fastest time and was 25.5 seconds behind Tanak, who emerged 2nd overall, to reinforce his position as leader.

HYUNDAI

SS15, which continues with a 15 minute service in between, uses the same course as the SS power final stage. Almost all the best teams chose 4 snow tires + 1 wet tire. Only Rappi challenged the stage with four snows. The best time here is Sold, followed by Tanak in SS2. Ojie, the leader, posted the fastest time in SS4 and the overall leader position is unwavering. “The first goal is the manufacturer’s title,” said Sold, who regained second place overall, dodging Tanak as a result of his best time.

The rally will once again be in the last special stage of the 2020 season with a 15-minute service. Once again, the tire selection was divided. Ogier, Robampera and Tanak are equipped with four rain tires. Robampera will be equipped with a wet one and Tanak will be equipped with a replacement snow. Evans, Katsuta, Sold and Rappi will race on four snow tires. Sold is working with a wet one as a spare. The rain that had been coming up for a while started to fall again and the field was getting wet.

Prior to the race for the upper ranks, the race for the best players in the sub-category was held. As a result, the WRC2 champion is Mads Ostberg / Torstein Ericksen driving the Citroen C3 R5. Yari Hutsnen / Mikko Lucca of Hyundai i20 R5 is the WRC3 champion, and Tom Kristenson / Joakim Schoberg is the Junior WRC champion.

Evans, the leading rider in the best WR car, clocked 11 minutes 7 seconds 9, which far exceeded the time of SS15. Katsuta, who subsequently raced, updated this time and wrote his name at the top of the leaderboard. After that, no pilot who exceeded Katsuta’s time appeared, and he was finally in the top three. The first three races are Tanak, Sold, and Ogier. Tanak raced without major problems and was confirmed to be third or higher overall in the second provisional SS time. Then Vendido finished in provisional 5th SS. In the general classification, he dressed to replace the classification with Tanak, but this confirmed Hyundai’s Manufacturers title. Ogier, who started from the end, was dedicated to avoiding risks and finished in the seventh best provisional time in the SS. This secured a victory in Round 7 and he won the seventh world title with co-driver Julian Ingracia. Tanak ranked second overall, followed by Sold and Hyundai in third place, followed by Rappi in fourth place and Robampera in fifth place.

Katsuta got the best time of SS16 with this. While suffering a disappointing retirement on the first day of competition, he showed a brilliant run as the second fastest time in the SS from day two onwards, and it showed as the rally grew in difficult conditions.

TOYOTA

With this Round 7 of the Rally Monza, the WRC of the 2020 season will end all competitions. The drivers’ classification is 1st Ogier (122 points), 2nd Evans (114 points) and 3rd Tanak (105 points). In the manufacturers ranking, Hyundai (241 points) won the championship consecutively, followed by Toyota (236 points) in second place and M Sports Ford (129 points) in third place.

The 2021 WRC has 11 races in total, starting January 21-24 at Rally Monte-Carlo and ending with the last race, Rally Japan. The spread of the effects of the new corona virus has not yet stopped, but I would like to wait for the 2021 season in the hope that it converges.
