Regarding the marriage of Mako (29), the eldest daughter of the Akishinomiya family, and Kei Komuro (29), “Bunharu Online” conducted the following questionnaire from November 14 to December 1.
Q. What do you think of Mako’s marriage? Choose one of the following options A to C and explain why.
A. Like Yoshiko’s words, it is desirable that Mako’s personal hopes are fulfilled.
B. As Mr. Akishinomiya said, marriage must wait until many people are satisfied and pleased.
C. I can’t say either.
The aggregated results of the questionnaire are as follows. The majority of respondents chose “B”, “Wait for marriage until many people are satisfied”, well above “A” and “C”.
The total number of responses was 1,250, with 48% of respondents being men and 52% women. Respondents are between 18 and 91 years old.
Voices that imperial life is covered by taxes
Compared to the March 2019 questionnaire conducted with exactly the same question, the number of people who answered “A”, which is an opinion of acceptance of marriage, increased by 9% to 21.4%. Overall, 28.1% of men and 15.1% of women chose this option “A”. Women were 13% less than men.
As for the reason, there were many voices that said they would like to respect the fact that they still have a strong intention to marry, despite public opposition. Furthermore, as the Constitution establishes that “marriage is established solely on the basis of the agreement of both sexes,” the voice was expressed that the right to marry should be protected if there is the intention of the other.
On the other hand, the percentage of those who chose “B”, which can be said to be a cautious opinion about this marriage, was 51.3% for men and 60.5% for women, which is a number higher for women, which is close to 10%. “B” is the majority for both men and women, but women seem to be more cautious about their marriage.
Many argued that the reason for this was that imperial life was covered by taxes. In addition to questioning the qualities of Kei Komuro, there were also voices that said that the rules of the imperial family should take precedence over individual freedom, unlike the marriage of ordinary people.
Whether Mako’s marriage is “public” or “private”, some voices are concerned
Additionally, the number of people who answered “C” increased by 6% compared to March 2019. Some voices were concerned whether Mako’s marriage, which would leave the imperial family if she married, should be considered a public matter or private. There were also some conditional supporters who said that they should not be paid the lump sum that they are supposed to pay at the time of marriage.
Compared to the March 2019 questionnaire results, “B” decreased and “A” and “C” increased. That said, most remain cautious about their marriage. Also, “A” and “C” include votes that can be said to be “defeated”, and it can be said that the public environment for this marriage has not changed that much.
By age of the respondents, both males and females tended to choose the cautious theory of “B” as they grew older.
Below I will post some of the opinions of the respondents.
