Why are people sleepy in the afternoon?
When I was a salaried worker, I was really distressed by the sleep problem that most concerned business people, and number one on the questionnaire, “I was hit by sleep in the afternoon.” If a meeting is scheduled at the time of being attacked by the dream, it is a living hell. Why are people sleepy in the afternoon? The causes are roughly divided into the following three.
1 Biological rhythm inherited from ancestors
2 The substance of awakening does not work when full
3 The sugar level at lunch alters the blood glucose level
Of these, the alteration of the blood glucose level is a cause of various effects on our sleep and the health condition living in modern society, so please understand well.
1 Biological rhythm inherited from ancestors
It is known that in the age of the ancestor, in addition to sleeping at night, it was a “two-phase sleep” in which a person takes a nap of about 30 minutes to 1 hour in the afternoon, and it can be said that it is a property genetics that make you sleepy in the afternoon.
Game gatherers who follow the old lifestyle still sleep in two phases, and the remaining naps (naps after lunch) in the countries surrounding the Mediterranean are believed to be genetic. Babies’ napping habit can be said to be a holdover from that.
If you are having difficulty with lack of sleep due to lack of sleep, take a nap in a positive way. Taking a nap does not eliminate all the risks of poor sleep, but it can temporarily regain focus and improve work efficiency starting in the afternoon.
However, long naps can disrupt the rhythm of your night’s sleep, so be sure to take a nap within 20 minutes before 2:00 PM so it doesn’t affect you. Keep in mind that if you sleep for more than 20 minutes, the depth of your sleep will decrease, making it more difficult to get up and your head will not function after getting up.
