Honda F1 Toyoji Tanabe TD Interview

Toyoji Tanabe, Honda F1 Technical Director, recalled the final Turkish GP race of Round 14 of the 2020 F1 World Championship in a post-race interview.

The Honda F1 engine team started from a good position with Red Bull Honda’s Max Felstappen on the second grid and Alexander Alban on the fourth grid, but the result was not as good as the sixth and seventh.

“It was a weekend where things happened on a very slippery road,” recalls Toyoji Tanabe.

“It stopped raining during the race, but it didn’t dry out until the end, and it was a difficult race where we were forced to handle the tires because we knew the conditions of the road surface.”

“I had a good feeling in practice and qualifying, but Ferstappen finished sixth and Arbon seventh, which was a disappointing position.”

Furthermore, Alpha Tauri Honda finished the race without points, with Danil Kubiat in 12th place and Pierre Guthrie in 13th place.

“I went up in the qualifying at the beginning, but I couldn’t advance because there was no grip on wet roads and it was difficult to overtake.”

In this race, two Red Bull Honda cars started and stalled. Although I managed to regain my position in the early stages, I was able to eliminate the possibility of starting from the first and second rows. Toyoji Tanabe also says that she recognizes that getting started is a problem.

“There are various controls involved, but regardless of the vehicle body or the PU, we will bring what we can do and consider solutions.”

Still, Max Felstappen’s sixth place in today’s race was the best result, says Toyoji Tanabe.

“That is correct as a package. Instead of making a big mistake, there are many weaknesses. Of course there is room for improvement, but I think this was the limit.”

“We talked a lot about what went wrong in the post-race meeting. We will review our weaknesses and prepare for the future.”
