Osmo series that expanded the name “Gimbal”
Speaking of DJI, it’s the pinnacle of drones, but we’re also putting a lot of effort on the gimbal alone. At professional exhibitions, drones are rarely displayed at the DJI booth, and professional gimbals like the Ronin series are lined up.
Perhaps the best known to consumers is the “Osmo Mobile” series. The first product debuted as a gimbal with a small camera, but then it changed to a gimbal for smartphones, and the fourth generation “OM 4” was released in August.
On the other hand, as for the camera-mounted gimbal, “Osmo Pocket”, which is significantly smaller than the original Osmo, was released in 2018. It was a slim and light gimbal that could be inserted into a pocket, and it was very well made as a product so if you accidentally touched it in the store and passed out a lot of people would have bought it. Many of my fellow writers bought it for event coverage.
This Osmo Pocket is back with much improved features like “DJI Pocket 2”. Osmo has disappeared from the product name and Pocket appears to be the name of the series. There are two products, the orthodox “DJI Pocket 2” and the “DJI Pocket 2 Creator Combo” packed with expansion accessories. This time, I borrowed the “DJI Pocket 2 Creator Combo”, but crushed the entire original “If this is a little more …”, and the camera is finished to get to the itchy place. It will be released on October 31 and the price is 49,500 yen (tax included). The “Creator Combo” costs 64,900 yen (tax included).
This time I was able to borrow a pre-launch evaluation machine. Therefore, be aware that there may be differences from the final specifications. Let’s try the power of DJI Pocket 2 that was just announced.
Significantly improved audio recording
Next, let’s review the enhanced voice. In the previous work, the microphone was only on the front, so when I pointed the camera towards the back in SELPHY mode, I could not pick up the sound well. There is a high possibility that the subject will speak when taking a self portrait, but the specifications of this microphone cannot handle it.
On the other hand, this unit has four-way microphones, so it can pick up sound in all directions. I also did a round around the camera while speaking, which also served as a face-tracking test, and the sound was picked up the same at all angles.
With regard to audio collection, in addition to stereo recording, there must be ways such as arbitrarily determining the direction of the sound collection and following the direction of the camera, but the software at the time of evaluation could not select the mode. .. The technology to dynamically change directionality using such a multi microphone is installed in the Panasonic LUMIX G100, but the same function can also be implemented in this unit. Since the smartphone application is not yet a normal version, it cannot be configured, but it seems that such selection can be made in the final product version.
The wireless microphone is the most notable audio feature. Turn on the power, press the connect button and you will be connected to the camera in just a few seconds. No pairing operation is required. Regarding the connection, there is no data on whether it is Bluetooth or the 2.4GHz band is used independently, but when I took a photo, there was no noticeable delay and it was practical.
When I tested how far it could transmit, it looks like it can transmit about 10m with a margin. If the microphone and the main body are blocked by the body, it will be difficult to enter. However, if you could see it, you could pick up sound even at a distance of about 30 m.
Long distance transmission can be difficult in situations where people are going back and forth between the camera and the microphone in a crowd, but if there are no obstacles in between, it seems possible to record audio even at a considerable distance. You can use a wired microphone with the Do-It-All handle, but in cases where the cable gets in the way, having a wireless microphone like this helps.
Also, since the wireless microphone unit has a microphone input terminal, you can connect a separate lavalier microphone and use the wireless microphone as a transmitter. In transmitter mode, the LED on the microphone shoulder changes from green to yellow, so you can easily tell which microphone is active.
Also, if you press the connect button on the side of the microphone while the wireless microphone is linked, you can remotely start and stop recording. It is convenient because you can start recording from a standing position on a standing report with the camera still.
However, the headphone terminal on the Do-It-All handle does not seem to be able to monitor the recording while recording. It’s a bit disappointing that you can only control the recorded file when playing it back.
General remarks
The original Osmo Pocket was a good shooting device with great gimbal features. However, when viewed as a “video camera” that includes audio recording, there are many unsatisfactory parts.
However, this time DJI Pocket 2 has increased the number of microphones and can record audio from all directions. Since the camera rotates with the gimbal, it is a good idea to record sound from all directions. Also, the joystick is attached and the gimbal can be moved freely with one hand, which is also a high point.
That’s all you can do with the standard package, but if you buy this unit and shoot V-Log, the “Creator Combo” will be a must have. Not only can you connect wirelessly to your smartphone, but you can also monitor voice with just the main unit after shooting, making it easy to check recordings on site.
Also, it has a great wireless microphone. If you move away from the camera, it will be difficult to record the sound with the camera microphone, so you had to use an external microphone or record the sound separately and edit it. However, when a wireless microphone is connected, collecting sound becomes much easier. Combined with face tracking, you should be able to shoot at a high level as if there were only a few staff members.
GoPro has also become Hero 9 and has functions for V-Logger, but DJI’s answer is probably this Pocket 2. With a variety of accessories, independent advanced shooting is possible without relying on a smartphone, as expected. , just the successor that took two years to develop.
