Sharp’s first low-priced 5G smartphone, “AQUOS sense 5G”, is now available.

Pricing is not disclosed, but according to a Sharp spokesperson, “a price range is expected that is not that different from the current AQUOS sense 3 sold in the 30,000 yen range.”

Until now, 5G smartphones have been mostly high-end machines that cost more than 100,000 yen, but the price will drop to the 30,000 yen level at a time.

The background is that Qualcom, which develops the Snapdrgaon series, which is the heart of smartphones, is releasing 5G-compatible chipsets for cheap terminals one after another. Until very recently, 5G-compatible chipsets were limited to the Snapdragon 800 series for high-priced terminals, but starting this spring the 700 series will be available, and later this year the 600 series, and next year 400 as well. We will start offering the numbers.

Sharp’s “AQUOS sense 5G” also uses Qualcom’s Snapdragon 690. Furthermore, the Snapdragon 690 not only supports 5G, it has also significantly improved the processor performance compared to the SoC installed in “AQUOS sense 3” launched last year, and has the advantage that applications and other devices they can work without problems.

The RAM of “AQUOS sense 5G” is limited to 4 GB and the storage is limited to 64 GB, which can be said to be a reasonable performance.

A sensation just the right size to target a sweet spot that sells

Looking at the actual machine in hand, it feels the same size as the predecessor “AQUOS sense 3”, which sold 3 million units and became a huge success. It is easy to operate with one hand and is the right size.

The display uses a 5.8-inch IGZO Full HD + (2280 x 1080) liquid crystal. Furthermore, it is equipped with the largest 4570 mAh battery in the history of AQUOS smartphones, and it is said to last a week with light use of about 1 hour a day and 23 hours of standby time.

The camera consists of a standard lens (12 million pixels) of 24mm in 35mm terms, a 2x optical lens (8 million pixels) of 53mm and a wide angle lens (12 million pixels) of 18mm. Both are equipped with electronic camera shake correction. This camera setup is common on high-end smartphones too. Other manufacturers are also increasing the number of cameras in low-priced smartphones, but AQUOS sense 5G is also firmly cracking down on this trend.

The anchor is activated automatically at home

Even if you buy a “5G smartphone,” it is often difficult to feel the value of 5G now that 5G content is still being developed.

Therefore, Sharp has installed “Tethering Auto” in this unit as a unique function that makes you feel the charm of 5G. This is a feature that automatically activates tethering only when you are at home. For example, if you are a single person, you can enjoy the Internet by automatically connecting your computer or TV to the home tether if you have a 5G contract with AQUOS sense5G, without having to bother with a landline to your home.

Although it has nothing to do with 5G, it is also optimized for cashless payments, which is attracting attention as a “new lifestyle” for new countermeasures against the corona virus. In addition to being FeliCa compatible, it is equipped with a “payment trigger” that allows you to activate any cashless payment method by holding down the fingerprint sensor.

In addition, it also supports IP68 waterproof and dustproof. Although it is a low-priced terminal, it has been upgraded with similar specifications to the predecessor “AQUOS sense 3” which sold 3 million units.

It will be released in spring 2021 and if you can’t wait, you can also buy the 4G version.

This model was announced on September 11, but it will be released in the spring of 2021. In the meantime, we will launch “AQUOS sense 4”, which has the same design and performance as “AQUOS sense 5G” but is not 5G compatible, after fall. Since the 5G area is still expanding, users who do not need 5G can choose “AQUOS sense 4”. Sales channels and operators for both models have not been announced.

Also, while not as cheap as “AQUOS sense 5G”, the 5G smartphone “AQUOS zero5G basic”, which keeps the price at the same level as the upper mid-range, will be launched this fall. This is a model with more improved specs such as the Snapdragon 765G and an organic EL screen that rewrites 240 times per second.
