[Tokyo 6th Reuters]- All Nippon Airways (ANA) announced on the 6th that the information of around 1 million people was leaked, including the names of the mileage members. The reservation system company used by some member companies of the airline alliance to which ANA belongs was hit by a cyber attack. ANA does not use the system, but information shared with some of the member companies has been leaked.
Other airlines have also been affected by the information leak, with Japan Airlines (JAL) announcing on the 5th that membership information for some 920,000 people was leaked.
According to ANA, what was leaked was the number and name of the member named “premium member” and the status of the assigned member according to the usage status. So far no evidence of misuse of the information has been confirmed.
All three pieces of information are shared among members of the global airline alliance “Star Alliance” to provide services such as airport waiting rooms and priority boarding. Passwords, passport numbers, credit card information, addresses, email addresses, etc. have not been leaked. About 1 million people equals about 3% of members with mileage.
The cyber attack was carried out by the Swiss company SITA, which provides a reservation system. The cause is being investigated by the company and action has already been taken.
Regarding the cyberattack on SITA, information was leaked on some 920,000 people shared by JAL among the member companies of the airline alliance “Oneworld”. As with ANA, member number, name, and status were leaked. According to JAL, there is no evidence that the information has been misused. Approximately 920,000 JAL members represent approximately 3% of all mileage members.
Both companies send emails to their members and make them known on their websites.
