With the opening of the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games approaching six months later, nearly 80,000 tournament volunteers who are active at the competition venues have dwindled one after another. This is because the one-year postponement makes it inconvenient and there is concern about the new coronavirus infection. There are concerns about a manpower shortage within the Games Organizing Committee, but the actual number has not been officially announced and the actual situation cannot be seen.
◆ “I disliked the government and the organizing committee.”
Nagisa Kuwano (21), a third-year college student in Kanagawa prefecture, declined in March last year immediately after the decision to postpone it. This is because it is unclear how to balance with volunteers, ahead of this summer’s job search and educational training.
“I like sports and I wanted to test my English skills by interacting with foreigners,” he said. Instead of the Olympics, he is in charge of planning activities as a member of the executive committee of another volunteer organization.
Nanho Suzuki (22), a fourth-year college student in Chiba prefecture, slowed in December last year as the spread of corona infection worsened. Older grandmothers and younger sisters studying at a medical school decided not to worry about their families.
“I used to be proud to volunteer for the Olympics, but I wondered if it was a welcome event for people, as medical care was in short supply due to crown disease and some people needed it.”
Regarding measures to prevent infection of volunteers, the interim report published by the government in December last year included “self-management using a physical condition management sheet”, but PCR tests and the like were considered in the future.
A 20-year-old from a university in Ibaraki prefecture said: “He was not aware of the specific measures and was displeased by the government and the organizing committee.” Online classes continue at the university and he asked, “It is strange to meet at the Olympic venue even though I cannot go to campus.”
◆ The organizing committee does not reveal the number of registered
The organizing committee recruited volunteers for the tournament in 2018. About 80,000 were selected out of 180,000 applicants. He has roles such as general management, competition, movement and ceremonies, and is indispensable for the tournament.
A person in charge said, on condition of anonymity: “I don’t know how many people declined in the whole competition, but there are some competitions where at least dozens of people declined. I tried to collect additional people, but the target number of people I have not reached the limit, and I am worried about the operation. “
In an interview with this newspaper, the Public Relations Department of the Organizing Committee said that “the number of people who declined after the postponement is very small and there is no problem with the operation,” but the number of people registered at this time was not disclosed. .
In December last year, he asked some hires to add more venues and competition periods, but explained that “not to replace the number of people, but to review the management plan for the postponement.” (Gang Jo Usui, Ryo Harada)
