DETROIT: There were no handshakes, hugs or clashes of hands after the game. That would be contrary to the rules, after all.
But the coaches finished the Detroit Tigers’ tenth in-school game in the mid-seventh inning Monday afternoon at Comerica Park, which marked the end of the 2020 summer camp.
If the world returns to normal in 2021, it will never happen again.
But that does not mean that the last three weeks were a drag. In fact, manager Ron Gardenhire said, it was quite productive.
“I think we did as well as we could with the situation we were in,” Gardenhire said. “You have a field and 60 boys. I think it started a little slow and then we had a better idea of how this was going and what we could do and what we couldn’t do. I think everyone got their job. These guys are ready to play, ready to start this. “
First, the good news: The Tigers finished the 10-game slate 9-0 with a draw. The bad news? The Tigers were also 0-9. With a tie.
Over 10 games, the Tigers’ hitters hit the plate 570 times. They had 36 doubles, four triples and 17 home runs. They batted .254 with a .311 base percentage and a .436 slugging percentage (.746 OPS). They struck out 119 times against 40 walks.
Pitchers finished with a 4.42 ERA in 134 innings of work.
That was not helped by a rough final exit by Monday’s starting pitcher Ivan Nova, who allowed eight runs on 11 hits.
But Gardenhire was not concerned. Nova will start in Game 2 of the regular season in five days.
“Nova got his job,” he said. “I spoke to (catcher Austin) Romine about it. She couldn’t get past her breakup ball. His curved ball is a great pitch for him and he really didn’t have a great feeling today. It’s just doing your job and making your release count so we can go to the post. He did that. That’s what worries us the most, lifting his entrances and his legs underneath him. He is a big and strong guy. You are ready to go.
Two young LSU Tigers pitchers, Alex Lange and Zack Hess, made their intrasquad debut in consecutive scoreless innings. Both pumped fastballs from the mid-1990s. After the game, they set out for Toledo, where they will continue to work for the remainder of the season.
“We saw 95, 96 (mph). That was fun, “said Gardehire. “They were overthrowing a little bit and we just hoped they wouldn’t kill anyone, because they were pretty excited. But actually they did very well. The ball comes out very well from his hand and I think if you looked at the scoreboard and saw the veil it was pretty good. The boys said the ball was bouncing. “
