It may not be the first, but his name continues to top the list of healthcare professionals who will receive the Covid vaccine on December 27. He is the doctor Fabio Toffoletto, chief of anesthesia and resuscitation of Ulss4 who at Covid-Jesolo Hospital took care of intensive care patients.

In recent months, he has launched several calls to raise awareness among the population to avoid social gatherings and respect the rules. Now, awaiting the 50 doses of Pfizer destined for the Jesolo hospital, he is also at the forefront to reiterate the importance of the vaccine.

The vaccine plan is underway, will you be the first to be vaccinated by Ulss4?
«V-Day is set for tomorrow -December 27-, the Ulss, including ours, have organized with the transport and storage of the doses. If I am not the first, it may mean that I will be the third. But the substance does not change and I have no problem in getting the vaccine: I am not concerned at all, I consider that vaccines are a normal practice, I always do the anti-flu as well.

Is this a shared thought also among your colleagues?
«All the medical staff of our hospital, who were invited to join the vaccination campaign, gave their consent. I think it is a gesture of responsibility. And not only. Those who work in these departments have seen with their own eyes the suffering that the virus generates among people. We are talking about pain and people who are sadly gone. Health personnel have developed a greater sensitivity towards this disease, everyone is aware of the importance of the vaccine, nobody has problems joining the vaccination campaign ”.

You sent deniers to tour the intensive care wards, what do you hear those same people say today?
“Nothing, it is not worth wasting more time with those who continue not to believe in the virus or question vaccines. I think I have higher priorities than the thinking of these people.”

And the citizens?
Trust and not be afraid. Vaccination begins with the health personnel and everyone has given their availability: it seems to me quite eloquent information.
Is the vaccine really the extra weapon to win the battle against the virus?
“Yes, it has always happened in the past. Take, for example, smallpox or polio, two diseases eradicated thanks to vaccines.

How long does it take to vaccinate the entire population?
“Certainly for months, but it is not up to us to say, in our case it is about something else, which is to solve current problems, which for the moment are certainly not lacking. However, I can reiterate that the vaccine is the useful weapon to win the fight against this virus.

Speaking of current affairs: how is the situation in the last days?
“It’s still very intense, not to say complicated. The wards are full of both infectious diseases and resuscitation. That is why it is essential to remain cautious and respect the rules.
