Less than three minutes and Tim Cook has already introduced the HomePod mini. It’s a small sphere-shaped smart speaker, apparently not much different from Amazon’s new Echo Dot. At less than 10cm tall, the small version of the HomePod smart speaker packs a lot of tech: it works with Siri, it’s compatible with Apple Music and other music streaming services, podcasts and more, but among the various app logos there’s no Spotify. . It also allows you to send voice messages to all Apple devices, including Airpods earbuds and Apple Watch. It costs $ 99, arrives November 16, but not in Italy.
5G for everyone
But Apple’s event in early autumn, moved to October by coronavirus, is dedicated to the iPhone, and once again the expectations of the day before are met: four models, all compatible with 5G networks, which they represent, for the CEO of Cupertino. , “A generational leap” for Apple smartphones. In fact, we could say for smartphones and that’s it, as Apple generally embraces technological innovations when they are ripe for the general public and often, with its power, helps to make them popular. Unsurprisingly, Cook talks about the collaboration between Apple and telephone operators around the world, and on the desert stage Steve Jobs Theater is also Verizon CEO Hans Vestberg, who announces the expansion of the American 5G network to the main cities. .
And phones
All four models are equipped with 5G support and, in the US version, they also support the mmWave standard. The Oled Super Retina XDR display, previously exclusive to Pro models, doubles the definition and is adopted across the range.
Some of the most notable changes are to be found in the design: the edges are no longer rounded as has been the case since the iPhone 6, but sharp-edged, as on the iPhone 4 or iPad Pro and iPad Air. The Pro models have a stainless steel frame, while the cheaper ones are aluminum, with glass on the front and back. Apple has made a new glass called “Ceramic Shield” that is four times more resistant to scratches and damage caused by drops. The Pro models will be available in the usual colors of silver, gold, and graphite (instead of space gray), but there is also a shade of blue (peaceful blue) like Apple Watch Series 6. For the others, however, the colors available they are black, white, red, blue, and green. Well, the processor is A14 Bionic, “the fastest chip ever mounted in a smartphone,” they tell Apple, undoubtedly the first with 5-nanometer technology.
The mini version of the iPhone is “the world’s smallest, thinnest, and lightest iPhone,” with a 5.4-inch (approximately 13.7 cm) screen. The iPhone12 Pro, on the other hand, is Apple’s smartphone with the largest screen ever – 6.7 inches. The Pro models resist water to a depth of 20 feet for up to 30 minutes and are protected from accidental contact with liquids such as hot or carbonated drinks.
The camera
The iPhone 12 Pro has a wide-angle camera with a seven-element lens and ƒ / 1.6 aperture, which offers 27% more performance for photos and videos in low-light environments; the ultra-wide-angle camera with a 120 ° field of view, ideal for capturing landscapes; and a telephoto lens with a 52mm focal length and 4x optical zoom, ideal for portraits.
Instead, the iPhone 12 Pro Max adopts a new ƒ / 1.6 aperture wide-angle camera, equipped with a 47% wider sensor with 1.7μm pixels for an 87% improvement in low-light performance. It also includes the ultra wide angle camera and a telephoto lens with a 65mm focal length with 5x optical zoom.
Finally, the Night mode and DeepFusion reach all the objectives, even the selfies, and thanks to the Smart HDR 3, it is possible to obtain natural images, even in complex scenes. The video section has also been revised and corrected, now in HDR with Dolby Vision up to 60 fps and improved video stabilization.
Coupled with the new Image Signal Processor (ISP), the A14 Bionic chip offers superior image quality and powerful computational photography capabilities impossible for traditional cameras. The iPhone 12 Pro models also feature Apple ProRAW, a file format that combines Apple’s multi-frame image processing and computational photography with the versatility of RAW, for full creative control over native color, detail and image. Dynamic range. on iPhone or other professional photo editing applications.
The two Pro models have a LiDAR sensor (as in the iPad Pro) that allows you to measure the distance of light and use the pixel depth information in a scene. This technology enables faster and more realistic augmented reality experiences and improves autofocus and bokeh.
What is not there
Apple will not include chargers or headphones with the iPhone 12, for environmental reasons. Vice President Lisa Jackson, stepping onto the solar-powered roof of the Cupertino spacecraft, explained that this choice will be able to significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions, first because it doesn’t have to produce them, then because it will make the box smaller. iPhone, allowing you to send more in the same space. Apple says it will save 2 million tons of carbon a year by doing so. On the other hand, there are already more than 2 billion Apple power supplies in the world (not counting counterfeit or compatible ones), so continuing to include them in the iPhone box would be a waste. Also, more and more people are switching to wireless charging.
Mag Safe
Those with an old MacBook will remember the MagSafe, a clever magnetic cable for charging the laptop. The name is back, and part of the concept, in the iPhone 12. It is a series of magnets arranged around the coil for wireless charging, ensuring perfect alignment with the iPhone and optimal efficiency. MagSafe chargers deliver up to 15W of power and support Qi wireless charging enabled devices. Charging solutions include the MagSafe Charger and MagSafe Duo Charger for iPhone and Apple Watch, as well as new silicone, leather, and clear cases that easily attach to the back of the iPhone and a leather wallet. Third-party manufacturers will also introduce MagSafe accessories, paving the way, according to Apple, for a new ecosystem tied to the iPhone.
