Climate: Will WINTER help us FIGHT THE CORONAVIRUS? Here is the ANSWER, with FORECASTS and OUTLOOK
Can we fight COVID-19 in the cold? How will theWinter? It will help us fight the coronavirus Or is the situation even at risk of getting worse? These and many more are the questions that we have been trying to answer in recent weeks and that are quite difficult for our country.
Let’s start with the analysis of what could happen at the meteorological and climatic level.
Well, if someone thought about living the upcoming winter season the old-fashioned way, they will probably have to change their mind, at least according to the most recent seasonal projections. In fact, the latest update has fully confirmed that winter 2020/2021 will be HOTTER than normal, with temperatures above average even up to 2 ° C in some sectors of Europe, notably Russia and the Scandinavian Peninsula, namely the “cold tanks”, from where the cold impulses directed to the southernmost latitudes of the Old Continent should come.
The main responsibility for this important positive anomaly is attributable to the Polar vortex, that is to say to that vast area of low pressure that remains semi-permanently (from September to May) above the North Pole and within which all the cold air that is continuously produced in the Arctic ice sheet is enclosed. The behavior of the polar vortex is NOT always the same and it can literally reverse the climatic conditions in a short time, causing, with its possible division, icy and snowy urges which can be quite incisive even to the Mediterranean and therefore also for our country.
Well, the latest predictions confirm that in the next Winter the Polar Vortex must remain compact, therefore with little chance of breakage (in technical terms, division, cracks).
EFFECTS in ITALY – For the moment, the projections confirm a positive anomaly for the BelPaese of temperatures of approximately + 1 ° C compared to reference climatic averages, in much of the national territory.
This is a forecast that, it must be said, is not too surprising, since it is fully in line with the trend in recent years, which has seen few or rare occasions of frost and, consequently, of Name to low altitude.
Regarding the projections of the rain, substantially expected on average, therefore without particular anomalies.
EFFECTS on COVID-19 – And ultimately, if the snow and the real cold DO NOT arrive, what effects could there be on the spread of coronavirus?
There are many who think that as we move into the cold season, making it easier to cope with easy ailments such as colds and flu, there may be a greater chance of contracting the coronavirus. But in reality, the cold and snow could somehow “put him to sleep”. In the past, our grandparents told us that influences in the mountains barely arrived in the middle of winter: this is because, thanks to the presence of snow on the ground, bacteria and viruses would spread much more slowly. However, snow is a real natural disinfectant, a remedy against pollution as it can, at least in part, purify the air.
According to these theories, if winter turns out to be dry and with temperatures above average, the protective action of frost and snow would be lost, which could, at least in part, slow down the spread of the virus. Not considering that the lack of a real frost would force people to stay much less indoors, in a kind of voluntary blocking.
However, it is also true that a less icy winter season would contribute to making all those seasonal diseases less likely that, never like in the coming months, will be burdensome for a health system already highly proven by the COVID emergency.
