Santelli had been fighting cancer for a while and had been a permanent presence in Parliament for almost twenty years, but at the request of Berlusconi, to whom she has always been linked also by a close personal relationship, she could not say no. “I never hid my illness, everyone knows it here, I am being treated in Paola’s oncology department, but I don’t even want you to persecute me,” he said during the election campaign to cut the rumors that were running about his health. And after the victory in the regional, he danced a tarantella that he later published on social networks to silence those who told him that he was physically too weak to assume the position. More recently, the stolen images of another wild dance to celebrate the victory of its candidate for mayor in San Giovanni in Fiore, Maria Rosaria Sucurro, have sparked controversy over non-compliance with the rules on social distancing. But perhaps even that tarantella was intended to be a way of refuting the rumors that had returned to haunt each other about an alleged worsening of his illness.
Lawyer by profession with internship in the law firm of Cesare Previti, he rarely attended court. Already in 1996, two years after joining Forza Italia, he lowered his robe to dedicate himself full time to collaborating with the legislative office of the Azzurri in the Senate, and then, two years later, moving to that of the Chamber. In Parliament since 2001, she was re-elected in the five subsequent consultations, occupying various positions. Undersecretary of Justice (from 2001 to 2006) in the second and third governments of Berlusconi, and Undersecretary of Labor and Social Policy (from May to December 2013) in the Letta government. A deputy and vice-president of the parliamentary anti-mafia commission, she left Montecitorio only when she assumed the presidency of the Calabria region.
