Today it would be easy to talk about a candidate sent in trouble. Even if the reasons to consider it would not be lacking. The decision to bet on him – it is said – was invented by the Democratic Party, based on a double combination: the fact of not burning a strong party candidate, given the race that has already been practically lost with Zaia; and the possibility of removing Mayor Sergio Giordani – of whom Lorenzoni, the leader of a left-wing civic coalition, was a deputy until last July – the only real counterpoint. But the professor, overwhelmed by a rare misfortune, would never accept this reading, who as an old rugby player and university professor much loved by the students, always used to fight, lead, amaze.
The feat of 2017
The figure of Lorenzoni emerged in 2017 when, at the head of a civic list, he managed to snatch a surprising 22.84% in the first round of the municipal elections in Padua. The professor led a group substantially made up of two souls: that of left-wing Catholics and that of movementists, linked to social centers and the radical left. A successful political experiment, which brought Sergio Giordani, who later became mayor, to the polls the necessary votes to defeat the then outgoing (and resigned) Northern League player, Massimo Bitonci. Educated, Europeanist, polyglot, Lorenzoni has been a consultant for some of the most important national institutions and companies for years, such as Confindustria, Enel, Cariplo; He was delegate of the Rector of the University of Padua for relations with China (in addition to being a founding member of the M31 incubator) and was a member of the scientific committee of the Lanza Foundation, a cultural institution of the Diocese. Far from being linked to the Moist left, the professor comes from a bourgeois family in Padua, radically anti-communist.
