Lampedusa decree: news arrives to help the island

The Executive has chosen to intervene in the issue of the landings in Lampedusa, after protests in recent days by Governor Nello Musumeci. The Council of Ministers was held late yesterday and, as Prime Minister Conte announced, the Government agreed to issue a new decree.

“The Council of Ministers, at the proposal of President Giuseppe Conte and the competent ministers, approved a decree-law that introduces urgent provisions to meet the non-postponable needs related to the epidemiological emergency of COVID-19. The text intervenes in various areas, in order to ensure a good start to the school year, remodel and guarantee local public transport and measures to support the Pelagie Islands ”.

But what is it exactly Lampedusa decree on landings and migrants? In the next few hours we will have more details, for the moment we know that the new decree law intervenes on two different fronts:

  • liberate and lighten the hotspot on the island of Lampedusa, move migrants and intensify control operations and coordination of reception centers (especially after positive cases of Covid-19);
  • foresee an aid plan aimed at private citizens of Lampedusa, companies and all commercial activities on the island, includingreduction of tax burden.

As we learn from the CdM press release:

“In consideration of the evolution of migratory flows and the consequent health security measures necessary for the prevention of contagion by COVID-19, the text provides, for subjects with fiscal domicile, the registered office or operational headquarters in the territory of the City Council of Lampedusa and Linosa, the suspension until December 21, 2020 of the payment of taxes as well as social and assistance contributions and premiums for the compulsory insurance against accidents and occupational diseases ”.

The island of Sicily is in financial trouble and “It deserves a strong response from the state”, these are the words of the Prime Minister.
