Don Antonio Bruno, during the funeral of the poor Eleonora Blanket, the 30-year-old murdered on Monday in Lecce with the child Daniele Of Santis, from the altar installed in Piazza San Paolo in Seclì, ideally he addressed the murderer begging him to redeem himself. In front of an entire town united around the young woman’s mother, Rossana Carpentieri, immobile in her unbearable pain, the celebrant had words of affection for Eleonora, but admitted that any consolation for her mother was impossible. «Accept our presence, Rossana – Don Antonio said turning to her mother – we cannot do otherwise. A moving message from a colleague from Eleonora’s university who wanted to give voice to all her friends: “From today it will be summer, Elly,” she says, “we will not allow you to be a black news page.” Moved by the mayor of Secl Yad Antonio Casarano who wanted to remember Eleonora, his confidentiality and his availability, showing dismayed by what happened, but confident in justice, like the poor girl. In the end, for his part, the invitation to Eleonora’s mother not to give up and return to school soon to her students: “They need you.”

The memory ended with a long applause and a hug with the mother of the young victim. «For me it is an even greater pain – said the mayor of Seclì, Antonio Casarano – I have known Eleonora since she was little, she and my daughter grew up together. I never thought I would participate in a funeral rite like that. A tragedy that affects everyone. We are all incredulous, a situation so unreal that it does not allow you to metabolize what happened. We do not seek revenge but justice. On the occasion of the funeral, the mayor proclaimed mourning to the city.
It was made up in the coffin with the wedding dress of the mother, Eleonora Manta. A wreath of yellow roses has been placed on the white coffin. Among those present were also friends and colleagues from the INPS in Brindisi where Eleonora had been working since July last year, but also many ordinary people. The funeral was held in compliance with the anti-Covid measures and was officiated by the parish priest Don Antonio Bruno. Don Antonio Musca, a relative of Eleonora, who should have concelebrated, did not participate: an illness overwhelmed him shortly before.
