Weather Alert, a violent Mediterranean cyclone rises through the Ionian Sea towards Calabria and Sicily: Reggio Calabria will be the most affected city tomorrow morning, Thursday, September 17
A violent wave of bad weather is about to hit Calabria and Sicily, triggered by the emergence of a Medicane, a Mediterranean hurricane, in the Ionian Sea. The storm, with the characteristics of a tropical cyclone, is already affecting the Ionian areas, with the first strong storms in lower Reggio Calabria. Heavy rain is already falling between Palizzi and Brancaleone. The Mediterranean hurricane will get dangerously close in the afternoon: in the afternoon strong storms will hit eastern Sicily, in Syracuse, Catania, Augusta and in the interior of the two provinces. The rains will also intensify throughout central and southern Calabria. But the “climax” of the bad weather will be tomorrow morning, Thursday, September 17, when violent storms with strong mistral winds will affect the Strait of Messina and in particular the city of Reggio Calabria, the most affected in its interior and the north, between Costa Viola, Villa San Giovanni and Aspromonte, where up to 150 mm of rain can fall in a few hours.
