“I am shocked. Concerned. A blow to me, my family, the people of my country. Out of a spirit of obedience and out of love for the Church and the Pope, I accepted his request to step aside. But I am innocent and I will prove it. I ask the Holy Father to have the right to defend me. ”These are the few words that the cardinal Angelo Becciu manages to whisper into the phone. Yesterday afternoon for the prefect of the Causes of Saints it was supposed to be the usual audience, the weekly meeting that serves to present the work of the dicastery, the new blessed, the new saints, the miracles. Instead, the meeting started in a different and dramatic way. Pope Francis immediately asked Cardinal Becciu to step down from his role. “I’ve always loved her, I respect her, but I can’t do anything else.”

One hour after Vatican reported that the pontiff accepted “the resignation of the post of prefect and the rights linked to the cardinal, presented by His Eminence Giovanni Angelo Becciu.” Which means that technically he is still a cardinal and can wear the red dress but in fact loses all prerogatives, such as the vote in the conclave. Practically the same punishment inflicted on Scottish Cardinal O’Brien, but in that case for a lurid history of pedophilia and abuse of seminarians. The motive that prompted Bergoglio is to have had evidence from his magistrates that Becciu allegedly committed the crime of embezzlement. Not so much for the famous London Palace investigation which is still ongoing and which, for the moment, appears to be on hold. What the pontiff allegedly accused the former prefect of Los Santos is that he had ordered – when he held the position of substitute in the Secretary of State – a bank transfer of 100,000 euros for the cooperative Spes de Ozieri, his Sardinian diocese, which has always been takes care of migrants and is in charge of one of the brothers. However, the money from the Holy See’s reserved funds – according to diocesan sources – appears to still be parked in the Caritas account in Ozieri and so far no one has touched it.
The name of Becciu It had been raised last year when the case of the London building bought by the Vatican in 2012 to invest the money of the Pigeon broke out. The investigation began as a result of a confrontation between the current alternate of the Secretary of State, the Venezuelan Pena Parra (who replaced Becciu in 2018) and the director of the IOR, Franco Mammì for the control of substances managed independently by the Secretary. of State. Peña Parra applied to the IOR for a loan to cancel an onerous loan obtained during one of the ownership changes. The IOR did not grant it and everything started from there. Magistrates have always assumed that between one property change and another someone had had a chance to get rich.
At the moment, however, apart from the six officials fired in May with an administrative procedure decided directly by Francesco, no one has yet been prosecuted and no one knows exactly whether a trial will take place. The financial operations of the Sloan Avenue property – according to the papers that have emerged thus far – have always been carried out with the approval of the higher authorities and authorized, at various levels, by Santa Marta. In this context, the management of Substitute Becciu and the role played by two financiers who took over at different times, Raffaele Mincione and Gianluigi Torzi, were discussed. The first financier, Mincione, has meanwhile denounced the Vatican before the English civil justice, asking them to comment on the correctness of the operations carried out.
