The first doses of the Covid vaccine arrived in Italy. This morning, shortly after 9.30 am, the van containing the vials produced by Pfizer Biontech passed the Brenner pass and entered Italy. Shocked by the police, the truck will continue its journey to Rome, where it will deliver the vaccine vials to the Spallanzani hospital.

The first load consists of 9,750 doses that will be administered to doctors, nurses and health personnel from December 27, the date set for European ‘vaccine day’.

At the Pratica di Mare military airport, on the Roman coast, everything is ready for the start of the works: in a first phase, the batches of Pfizer vaccines will leave the airport, but the second phase will be the major work of the military hub – When the administration points increase from 300 to 1500 and the mass vaccination campaign begins, presumably between the end of January and the beginning of February, that will become the logistical heart of the distribution.

Meanwhile, diluents, syringes and needles are ready for the first tranche of administrations. In the first phase, there will only be 300 sites for the administration of the Pfizer vaccine, mostly hospitals. This is because the characteristics of the serum and the very low storage temperatures (-80 degrees) limit its ease of distribution.

The massive distribution of the vaccine will arrive with the second phase: from the national hub of Pratica di Mare, batches of vaccine will depart, transported with the support of the armed forces, up to 1500 administration points, to which will be added a series of mobile units to reach everyone. those who will not be able to reach the vaccination points, such as the elderly and the sick who cannot leave home.
