At least 100,000 people were urgently evacuated to Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan due to the collapse of the Sardoba dam in the Syrdarya region that caused the leakage of millions of liters of water. Sixty wounded, thousands of hectares have been submerged. The reservoir created by the earth dam contains 922 million cubic meters for irrigation. Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev visited the affected areas on Sunday and telephoned his Kazakh colleague Kassim-Jomart Tokayev. An investigation for negligence and violation of building regulations has been opened. In the days before the disaster, the area had been hit by strong winds and torrential rain.
