This year it had been highly recommended. Perhaps that is why the absence of the flu vaccine is now being felt even more. A totally Italian paradox is what is sending local health and medical offices into a tailspin, overwhelmed by thousands of vaccination requests. From Rome to Bari the problem is always the same: it is not known when the doses will arrive.

BOOM. The peak comes around January, but this time millions of Italians have decided to join the vaccination campaign that started last October. Fear of Covid, or of ending up in the emergency room.
FREE. Vaccination is free at the GP for the elderly and patients with chronic diseases. And so this year, the National Health Service bought 17 million doses, compared to 11 a year ago.
LACK OF PHARMACIES Pharmacies took the worst, getting only 250,000 doses compared to a million last year. In pharmacies the vaccine is paid for but there is practically none. So adults without pathologies, at the moment, do not have them.
IN SCAGLIONI While for Asl the arrivals are different because the different Regions have made multiple tenders and the companies are dividing the distribution.
ROME CAPUT In the capital there is a hunt for vaccines: a first delivery allowed to vaccinate a few thousand people and then stop. Most of the doses (one million for the next leg) are yet to come. Even payments are not available. ASL is asking citizens who do not fall into the risk categories to call back in December. But even for those at risk, the general practitioner pathway is blocked. “We no longer know what to answer – underlines Pier Luigi Bartoletti from Fimmg in Rome – we knew that the doses had to arrive after 8 November. Let’s wait for next week.
MILAN AT THE START In Lombardy the situation is different: “The quadrivalent adjuvant vaccine and also the nasal one have been purchased for children,” explains virologist Fabrizio Pregliasco, Irccs Galeazzi’s health director, “but the doses are arriving in patches.” However, vaccinations are starting, even on the street, such as in the tense structure of Civil Protection or in the Aler in via Calveirate.
APULIA IN THE MIDDLE The Puglia region opted for 2,100,000 doses, among the first to move, but only half of them arrived: around 650,000 doses delivered by Sanofi and around 400,000 doses by Seqirus.
