The Secretary of State of the United States, Mike Pompeo, accused Russia of being behind the great cyberattack suffered by the United States government in recent months, described by American newspapers as one of the most serious in history. On Friday, in a radio interview, Pompeo said: “We can say quite clearly that it was the Russians who led this initiative.” Several anonymous sources in US government newspapers had already said that a Russian spy agency was suspected of being behind the attack.
The attack, which affected several federal government agencies, including the Department of Energy, which is responsible for managing nuclear weapons, the Pentagon, and the departments of Treasury and Commerce, is expected to have started in at least March, according to Cybersecurity and Infrastructure. Security Agency (CISA), the agency of the Department of Homeland Security that deals with cybersecurity, but it is not yet clear how the hackers managed to penetrate government systems, or what the targets of the attack were. It was carried out using software produced by the American company SolarWinds. Companies and organizations in other countries using this software were also affected.
Pompeo did not elaborate on the indictment: he said investigations into the attack are continuing and much of the information about it likely will not be released for security reasons. However, he said that Russia has tried to “damage the lifestyle” of Americans. Russia had already denied any kind of involvement, saying that “Russia does not carry out cyberattacks.”
