PADUA «Daddy is my superhero». When the Dr. Conti reopen the front door after twenty-two consecutive hours of work in the medical guard, find a wait for him four month old son that on the jumpsuit has an inscription that goes straight to the heart: “Dad is my superhero. Alessandro Conti, forty-one years old from Albignasego, doesn’t feel like a hero at all, but that phrase is still the sweetest and most exciting way to start 2021. He spent New Year’s Eve working at the Continuidad del Bienestar headquarters in Conselve and just when I was on duty for him. A phone call came in that he will never forget: “Doctor, we are waiting for you on Monday to undergo the anti-Covid vaccine.” Alessandro will be among the first general practitioners to be immunized.
L’EUPHORIA
Dr. Conti speaks with his voice still full of adrenaline: “That call triggered a succession of emotions in me. The first were amazement and disbelief. But how? Are they calling me already? A few months ago the vaccine seemed like a distant goal and yet we are already there. I wasn’t expecting it so soon. The other emotions came later and they were joy and euphoria. This is a momentous event that deserves the Nobel Prize in Medicine but perhaps also the Peace Prize, given the splendid collaboration launched by many different countries to achieve this result.
Conti worked as a medical guard from 10 a.m. on December 31 to 8 a.m. yesterday. “There was an important collaboration of many family doctors who continued to work even though it was a day before a holiday. However, several calls came in mainly related to people with Covid asking for advice on managing symptoms or people who had been in contact with positives. But the requests also came from lonely old people who perhaps needed psychological support and reassurance.
More than 250 calls arrived on New Year’s Eve to the 13 continuity of care centers. Confirmation of the importance of this service had already arrived a few days later with the data contrasted by Dr. Mariateresa Gallea, secretary of the Fimmg Continuity of Attention of Padua: five thousand requests from Thursday to Sunday. An average of 1,200 calls per day and a peak of 2,000 calls in Santo Stefano.
THE CENTRAL
Important numbers also for the Suem 118 operations center. Director Andrea Spagna speaks of a “quiet night” but in the space of 24 hours there were still 550 calls, of which about a hundred were related to Covid. 230 interventions were carried out. “In recent months we have seen ups and downs – explains Dr. Spain – The interventions have been increasing progressively until reaching the peak in December and now we have stabilized. The descent is not seen. But did the doctors and nurses find time to toast at midnight? “Normally, Spain responds, from midnight on is precisely the moment when the phones start ringing the most.”
AT THE HOSPITAL
The Covid emergency room, for its part, maintains an average of 40 accesses per day plus another 150 for the traditional area. “The lowest point was on March 15 with 80 accesses in total – says the primary Vito Cianci – now people have understood that they can go to the emergency room with absolute safety without fear of contracting Covid.” The credit is also due to the high level of professionalism of the staff: “No one has backed down – Cianci smiles – Working with this team is a source of pride.”
