Since last spring, since the outbreak of the pandemic, the monk Guidalberto Bormolini, President of the Florentine Association Everything is life besides, and his confreres tried to offer support to the sick of COVID-19 only in hospital wards. They did it with phone calls OR video calls: “We listen despair and fear. The fear of dying alone and suffocated. Shortness of breath causes pain and distress. But we realized that ours remote support is insufficient. We understood that it is necessary in every way to ensure the presence of a relative for the sick person ”, explains Father Bormolini. Thus was born the idea, shared with Giampaolo Donzelli, president of the Meyer Foundation and member of the national bioethics committee, to request the Tuscany region a procedure of family member access to Covid departments. So that the terminally ill person is not left alone in the face of death, without a caress, a loving hand.
The proposal liked Vatican and to the Region: “We accept the proposal of the association Everything is life, because we cannot underestimate the side effects that Covid can determine in the lives of families, exposed to deep pain, when they are forced to separate from their loved ones ”, explained the President of the Region. Eugenio Giani. The Councilor for Health echoed Simone bezzini: “It is a proposal that deserves the maximum attention to translate into concrete actions in a short time. The important thing is that everything happens in the maximum security”.
On November 23, the regional council will decide on the constitution of a expert table which can quickly pass the test procedure. “Table with long times? No way. It is not about whether the proposal will be implemented, but how. We have to be fast but also cautious”, Explains Father Guidalberto.
In the Region, they assure that before Christmas the procedure of access to the relatives of the terminally ill of Covid will already be tested in at least one Florentine hospital yet to be chosen and if all goes well it will also be extended to other hospitals. Family members in the Covid neighborhoods is just a Tuscan proposal, but the promoters of the initiative hope to be able convince other regions too do the same.
But the road will not be easy because, as Father Bormolini and Donzelli explain, it is necessary to tell the relatives how to move and what precautions to take and also how. manage emotions when they will be in front of the sick family member and close to death. One wrong step is enough, perhaps the spark of an infection and the entire initiative, unique in Italy, runs the risk of failure.
