The infections that hit Donald Trump, other White House personalities and three Republican senators provoke frantic reactions on several fronts: the dynamics of the electoral campaign change, national security problems arise never before considered (the risk that, in the face of a threat nuclear power, a sick president infects the entire command structure that will take refuge with him in a bunker), they are born doubts about the chain of command should Trump no longer be able to fulfill his duties with the deputy, Mike Pence, who is also ill. For now Trump does not renounce his powers, but you might be forced to if his condition worsens in the next 48 hours, as the White House doctors fear.
Then there are the pressure from Democrats (so far rejected by Republicans) to postpone the Senate vote on the new Supreme Court justice, Amy Coney Barrett, elected a week ago by Trump. America is also in great turmoil that, not believing in official truths, throws “Alternative truths” and more or less bizarre conspiracy theories: among Trump fans there are those who think the virus was inoculated on purpose who makes the tampons, while for others the contagion is a hoax invented by Trump himself. He wants to show himself completely cured in a few days, winner also against the virus (perhaps thanks to his beloved experimental drugs) or simply looking for an excuse to avoid more televised confrontations with Biden.
However, the Oscar goes to the conspiracy theorists of the QAnon movement: those who think that Trump has taken to the field to thwart a conspiracy of heads of state who abuse children around the world and who are secretly led by Hillary Clinton. . once again, the impending arrest of Hillary. Why? The signal, they say, was the same Trump in the tweet in which he announces his illness and says that “we will get out of it together”. Writing everything in capital letters TOGETHER. Which for conspiracy theorists, it should read: TO GET IT (that is, we put it)
How will the electoral campaign change at this time? Is it possible to postpone the presidential elections? Democrats rule it outLaws and the Constitution should be changed in a few days and millions of Americans are already voting by mail or early voting at polling stations.
The left, on the other hand, is asking the Senate to suspend Barrett’s ratification proceedings in the Supreme Court. But its leader, Republican Mitch McConnell, does not want to know, despite the fact that he already has three senators sick with coronavirus (in the classroom the right controls 53 out of 100 seats) and others could fall in the coming days. He is convinced that everyone will heal in a couple of weeks and will be able to vote.
Meanwhile, Biden toned down the standoff by blocking all personal attacks on Trump and erasing the negatives. For now, only positive messages will be spread. Will the debates continue? It’s too early to say: it depends on the evolution of the president’s illness. Who for now does not give his powers to his substitute. Pence doesn’t even replace him at rallies because, as one collaborator of the leader says, “in the cast of the film produced by Trump there is only room for one star: him.” But if his conditions worsen, his powers will temporarily pass to his alternate, under the 25th Amendment to the Constitution. More uncertain of what would happen in case of illness also of Pence: it would be the turn of the Speaker of the House, Nancy PelosiBut the Conservatives would hardly give the opposition leader the green light.
And there are no procedural rules to manage such a transfer of power.
